Of Interest to You
and Me
The Government was well advised„
-to sit down bard on the notion of in-
creasing the parliamentary salary
from $4,000 to $,6,000. Why, from
what we've heard there are plenty
of people who could manage ,• the of
fairs of the Dominion much better,
than they aro now managed, and for
less money, In fact, such people of-
ten tell you how it should be done,
for nothing.
Clear-cut decisions in elections
seem to bea thing ,of the past. In
Saskatchewan last week the electors
returned Liberals and Conservatives`
almost equal numbers, with a
-dozen •mthers, which gives no party
. m
'a ajority and makes for unstable
and unsatisfactory government.
Premier Gardiner was returned but
'several members of his cabinet were
' -snowed under, amongst them Mr.
many

Latta, who is known to here -

Some comment has been made in
'the public press about the fact that
of the thirty-three. 1929. graduates of
the O.N.O. not one has returned to
the fem..
Usually, of course, when a nun.
'studies law he practises law, when
'he studies .medicine, he practises
medicine and when he graduates in
engineering he takes that up as his
life's work. Occasionally a man niay
find that he has made a mistake and,
• after practising • the profession for
which he was trained for a time,
will turn to something more congen-
ial or more fitted to his peculiar
bent. This is no doubt the reason
that many seemed to see in the trend
away from the farm of the young
men trained in the science of farm-
ing,,something unusual and unnatur-
al. But all the significance attached
to this seemingly unnatural trend
may be the fact that there is too little
of such training. litany of these
"graduates , are employed in callings
closely allied to *venlig, positions in
which their early enviromnent and.
lural training will stand' them in
good stead. These positions were'
waitiiig for them, could not have
'been filled as effectively by any oth-
errs and they will find satisfaction
themselves and servo their country
and their class, that is the industry
-which reared thein ,better there than
.anywhere, possibly. True, a few went
outside the farming sphere altogeth-
•err on graduation. But, possibly, any
such should have been trained .at
•some other university, only that the
Agricultural College was the one.
they thought of first. They might
be better fitted for their work had
they been trained somewhere else,
"but having taken this eourse of train-
ing they exercised the right of free
men and chose their own callings. We
' 'have no cause to find 'ani fault with
them. But , when the practise of
' taking a course of training becomes
'the rule rather than the exception
and when every -young fanner takes
it as a matter of course, then.they
-will return to the farm tolive broad-
er, happier and more useful lives.
'This country, will never become what
it should become until those occupied
in agriculture • are ' receiving more.
nearly what they should receive in
comparison to the value of their con-
tribution to the wealth of the coun-
try, and until farming is considered
one of the preferred industries.
