E. Manning, Manager 496 oma Of interest to •You and lVIe We haven't said anything about the weather for a week or so—that is publicly, but this morning's snow storm seems to be .a little too much. Does that new weatherman hi To- ronto not. even know it is May? Orval Shaw, who has been eluding 'the police for some time; was finally captured on Sunday night. Had 'Shaw given himself up he might have 'had seine of his time served, instead of which he will have to spend some of the best of summer weather be - 'hind bars. * * * e Dr. A. E. Marty, the first woman 'to receive the degree of L.L.D. from a Canadian University and the first 'woman to occupy the post of Public school inspector, died in South Af- rica last. week. Dr. Marty was in 'South Africa. on exchange. She 'graduated with honours from Queen's 'University in 1896. Editor Duncan of the Wiarton •''Eehb recently hired with a .farmer _for• a month, Ieaving his newspaper 'work to others. Perhaps he's one of those editors who has always been telling the farmers how to farm and, finding they pay little atten- tion to him, thought he'd go out and 'show them a few things. :k a: 5 The Seaforth Expositor. thi perhaps we should go back to ten commandments and repeal 'great mess of other laws. It wo certainly simplify life a bit if could do away with a lot of hainp ing laws and, there's no denying, the ten commandments given Jews from Mount Sinai thousan of years ago, were obeyed by t people of 'today every law on 'statute books of every civiliz country in the world might 'scrapped. nks the the uld we er•- if the, ds he time There are those who rather belat- ed tle the Imperial idea, who say ,that be it is enough to be Canadians, this is our country, why do we bother with England or the other parts of the Empire? Canada is, indeed, our country and far be it from us to say or do anything which would dispar- agethis great land of our birth and our love. .But a son when he is grown to manhood does not repudiate his family and go out simply on "his own" to use a slang phrase. If he is the son of an honourable family he is proud to acknowledge his con- nection with it and -the fact that he is loyal to his name and family doesn't detract froin his own dignity,. it rather adds to it.So may. we Canadians be proud to be identified With and glad to acknowledge that we are a part of the British Empire. The late Sir John Willison in an article published shortly before his death, thus expressed himself in this connection: States does not buy from us, except what they cannot get anywhere else. Canada should make an effort to sell more goods to the United States or she should cease buying so much from them. We ought to be able to keep the balance of trade_ even at the very least. . * * Thursday next, May 23rd, is Em- pire Day and will be observed as such in the schools of Ontario. Em- pire Day was established about this= ty years .ago, the idea originating with Mrs, Fessenden,.Hamilton, who attended a meeting of the Dundas Board of - Education and suggested thin 'a day be set apart for patriotic exercises to be called "Flag Day." The board approved the plan and a celebration was held in the Dundas schools in 1898. The matter was then brought to the ,attention of the Minister -of Education, the Hon. W. G. Ross, who took it up with enthus- iasm 'and expressed 'a preference for the name "Empire Day," After the suggestion had been approved by the Educational Associations and the Government of the clay had endorsed the scheme the Minister in 1899 sent circulars to the school inspectors and the idea caught the public fancy so well that since that .time "Empire bay" has been.established in all the British Dominions. For some years the Ontario De- partment of Education has been sending out little booklets to the schools throughout the Province con- taining suggested programs and many interesting facts about the great commonwealth of nations which make up the British Empire, and this year, as in other years, the children in our schools will be taught something about their great. heritage .as citizens of this great land and of time British Empire. *• May 26th to June let has been de signated Empire Shopping Week tet us 'look about for things in the Empire. during that week as we do our ordinary shopping. Or w might perhaps do a bit of extra shopping in. ender .le make the ef- fort "go over" well, It might .surprise us, if we took the trouble to find out just where tho goods we ordinarily- buyee,'are manufactured, to find how mach we use comes from foreign countries... Not that we should' boycott goods of foreign manufacture, we need to trade with all :countries, but often: we Wright just as well patronize' our own country or that of some one of the several countries in the Empire, as to biiy the geode manufactured elsewhere. We are buying. so much from m h m theUnited Sta e States us now that d the trade balance is very much against us. Tying side by side. as we da, the argument is that .we can- not help buying from the United Stu.tes. But, evidently, : time United After a three -months' stay at Bog- nor, in Sussex -by -the -sea, Isis Ma- jesty, King George V, returned to Windsor yesterday, having travelled far on time way to complete recov- ery, Ire was given a'• great • recep- tlon by the vast crowds who waited for his coming, -King George's 'recovery is one of the mnarve% of the age, his ease be- ing, so serious at times during his long' illness that it appeared that his life hung by a thread. But from the moment of the return of his eldest 'son, the Prince of Wales, who trav- elled half way across the world to reach has father's side, his recovery 'began. The draining of his lung, of course, which was not done until the Printe's return, probably had "e good deal to de with his turn for the bet- ter, but the fact that "David" was there to take the responsibility may lave helped not a little. And the sea air during the past three months has done •wonders, as might have been expected, for the Sailor King. Yes- terday was a glad day for the Eme pire when it's legal heed was able to returmt. and to take up at least a 'portion of his kingly duties. n .Y. * * ,made • s e "In these days the power and ma- jesty of "Empire do not make the old appeal to men's hearts and emotions, The things written deeply in the his- tory of Britain that we most value are 'the love of truth, thetradition that a man must keep his word, the obligation that a nation must keep its engagements. . Nowhere in mod- ern British history has Britain be- trayed an ally, or treated a fae un- generously, of provoked war among the nations. ;There is a great civil and Christian value in such a tra- dition, and it is of high consequence to the world, add particularly 'to weaker nations and 'unenfranchized peoples, that such an Empire should endure. Through 'connection with Great Birtain and co-operation, with Great 'Britain, Canada has greater power to servo all the good ends of tidililation than carni be had through any •autonamous nationality. Or any independent ' alliance , with other. countries," im- portance s prize our ever=growing im- p e as a member 'of the group of nations forming the British .Empire and ;teach our children to live up to the best, traditions of the British' .nate.
