Story,
A subscriber who ,came into pay
bis sub. the• other day said he had
Trot been able to sleep and' thought it
might be this -unpaid su'bscripti n
that caused his wakefulness. This
has caused us some anxiety with re-,
;geed, to'a:feW other people.
It is rather amusing to see the.
'patty newspapers in Canada' dili-,
-gently taking sides in the British
elections. ' They -might might as" well save
their breath, those sturdy folk in the
British Isles will vote as they please,
raying little 'attention to the news-
papers there, -ouch less to the pap-
ers here.
Y
The matter of the rural mail caur-
ier came up for some discussion in
-the House of Commons the other day
When the Hon: Hugh Guthrie intro-
•duced a motion to have the tender
-system of letting contracts abolished
-appointments made en a permanent
basis, -by the civil service commission
and, the rate of Remuneration
-brought up • to something nearer a
just rate. The amendment was vot-
ed down of coyrse,'althqugh some of
the Progressives voted with. the Con-
servatives, but the matter has been.
:brought that much ' nearer settle-
ment. The case df the rural mail
couriers must be dealt with at no
distant day as they are an important
class of public servants who are not
• getting a fair deal at present.
FORMER :A.SHFIELD RESIDENT
-DIES AT ESSEX
'Mrs. William Stothers died on
Tuesday of last week at -the home of
her son, S. B. Stothers, district re-
presentative for Essex county and
formerly of Huron county. The late
Mrs. Stothers, who had been a life-
long resident of Ashfield township,
had gone last fall to. reside with her
son in Essex, and some six' weeks
ago became i11; being seized with
en attack of pneumonia to which
she finally succumbed.
Born some 70 years ago in , the
township of Ashfield, the deceased
was a daughter of the late Mr. and
Mrs. John Andrew of Ashfield. One
OW \ brotherIsaac Andrew, of Ashfield
township, survives, as...does also one
sister, Mrs. SatnueI Kilpatrick of
Brockville. A family o£ five sons
and two daughters survive. They
are: Ma's. Horton of Ashfield and
Mr's. Crispin of Ogema, Sask.; also
S. B. •Stothers of Essex;, Canon
Stothers, public seltool inspector of
London; Isaac, inspector of eleva-
tors, Wilkie, Sask.; Bailie of Walk-
•ervi11e, and Carman, inspector of
public schools, Prince Edward coun-
ty,
She was predeceased by her hus-
band 24 years. The family were all
at -'the bedside. of their mother be-
fore she died. -
The late Mrs. Stothers • was a wo-
man of fine character, and wes
much loved, not only by the mem-
bers of her family, but alsd-by all
- who knew her. She was always
actively associated with the work
of her own church, as well as with
other good causes, and will be much
missed, not only in the fancily
circle, but in the community as
well,:
The remains were interred on Fri-
day afternoon last in the family plot
in Dungannon. cemetery. A funeral
service was held atEssex, at the
home of her Boni, S. B. Stothers, at
11.80 a,tn. en Thursday, after which
the -body was brought to the old home
' in Ashfield, now occupied by Mr. and
Mss. Morton. The service was con-
ducted by Rev: A. W. Brown.

TITLED FARMERS NOT
UNCOMMON
The tenth Earl of Egmont has
left the glare of publicity for the
.,quietude• of an English countryside
and the obscurity of the house, of
'lords. After twenty six years iri the
_4lberta :foothills as a• rancher he
--wein't-rest so' easily, even in a sleepy
i,.Hi0npshire village. He will miss the
life worth, living and probablyvviII
return, a chastened peer, to ':Canada.
'There wasn't- any real reason for all
the publicity the Percivais got out of
the earldom. It Was no surprise to
them and peers are not uncommon
in Canada., The Prince of Wales is
-an Alberta rancher: The Earl' of
1liinto still owns a ranch near the
royal • range. Lord Aberdeen has a
ranch at the north end of Okana-
• gam'va lie
Y and the Duke of Suth-
edland near' Brooks, Alberta. These
`farms are still well developed and
-are creditable to their "owners and
workers.
Outside :of these` absentee land-
•Ior•ds, Canada has several titled. far-
-mers, . Some are of-gther• ,rationale
hies than British, such as peupt de

Hagen, of Germany; Barone, Joseph
:and Andre Csavossy;' Count, ;Milian--
•'Restegueler, of Australia, and -Count
J. `W. Hamilton, of Sweden. Prince
Erie of Denmark once farmed hi AI-
•berta. Western Canada; however, has
many titled farm operators Who have
come to that territory because they
1oVe`the life there, or because it is
possible in its democraey to earn live-
'7i.hoods which ;might have -proved enr-
tarimeaingc-• elsewhere.

found in an ;unconsciousconditiea in
the basement of the school. He was
immediately removed to his home,
where it was found that one side was
paralyzed, Mr. Hudson has a strong
constitution and is a few hours his
condition had greatly improved qnd

Kelly's seizure followed • the -noon-
