THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF
NON -BROODINESS IN
POULTRY.
(Experimental Farms Note,)
Only a few years ago, a large -num-
ber of people who kept poultry, con-
sidered broodiness in their flock an
asset rather than a possible liability.
With an increase, especially since
1018, in the number of poultrymen,
and therefore an increase in the in-
tensive system of housing the birds,.
a menace has arisen in the shape of
ground contamination, so that it is
all-important that the chicks each
spring should be reared on clean
ground.
If broody hens are used as a hatch-
ing or rearing medium, it is only nat-
ural to suppose that they will pass
on to their chicks any intestinal par-
asites or disease with which they
may be infested or infected.
By breeding out broodiness front a
flock the incentive to use ,incubators
and brooders is increased, thereby
safe -guarding the flock to some ex-
tent.
. It is quite possible to breed • out
broodiness by keeping a record of the,
number of times the pullets in a
flock go broody in a year, and then
culling those birds which have been
broody, say, more than twice. Of
course, if a male is purchased, it
should be from low -broody stock...
Broodiness has., been decreased con-
siderably on the Dominion Experi-
mental Station, Snimnerland, B. C.

TO DAFFODILS
Oh, Daffodils, as yellow as gold!
Your beauty, too precious to ever be
sold.
Cheering a lonely invalid's room,
Growing in gardens ,and flaunting
your bloom;
Oh, Daffodils! yellow -as gold!
Sending back the sun's bright rays,
Oh, dainty springtime fairy fay!
Timid of the frost, it seems, "
But when the sun sends out warm
beams
You send the bright rays back
again.
Oh, Daffodils! the springtime favor-
ite,
You tomo when the brave butterflies
still fear to flit.
Oh, Daffodils! when springtime fades
away.
Your loving memory, in my mind will
stay.
Sweet Daffodils, as yellow as gold!
