Here's a toast to the ladies which

;.Here's to the ladies, lord bless 'em!
You recall how we• used to help dress
• 'em?
It was: "Honey hook this,"
.Or: "Dearie, pin -that,"
'''`Please lace up my shoes,
••Or "Straighten niy hat,"
.A man had to be little John on the
spot .
:In 'the old fashioned days, whether
willing or not.
'But now—what a joy and a blessing!
Wo live in the days- of sane dressing,
"There,is nothing to fasten
-On silken clothes trim,
Nothing to lace up,;
And nothing to pin.
.And sol here's to the• ladies, lord bless
'em!

Premier Squires of Newfouridland
is reported as saying that Canadian
newspapers are too critical, that that
'discourages the idea of union in his
• country. Well, we'd advise Premier
'Squires to keep clear of the Dominion
'if ,he's afraid of a bit of criticism.
Do the newspapers of his native is -

One would imagine that the habit
of going about without any : clothing,
a curious habit of the Doulchobors in
the west, would cure itself in our
Canadian winter climate, but it does-
n't seem to have done so: How about
-compelling them to walk to and from
their meetings' in nature's garb with
the thermometer at twenty; below.
But then, the difficulty seems to be to
compel these' determined Doukhobor
to de anything they do not wish 'to

needed to fill the vacancies: If'there
was a- small monetary return more
might be ready to act, but assail open
question., it is a well-known fact
that those who act:as coenciilors in a
town like Clinton give largely of their
time and thought to public' affairs
and receive nothing but criticism and
often abuse for their pains. People
might have more respect for their
services if they were paying, even a
email moiety of what they are worth,
for those services.

Isn't it funny?
People buy fire insurance -lis case of
a possible fire.
Well and good.
But the same people will Ieave
off buying cold insurance, against a
dead sure winter until the first cold
weather hits them.
Perhaps it's because they bcnow
that we'll rush the coal to them after
the cold snap comes.
But buying coal is like buying any
other life insurance; the earlier you
buy it, the cheaper it is.
