"1 Believe There is a
Heaven Dogs
By BISHOP, WAKEFIELD.
There has arisen in recent years
a''fresh desire in human' minds to
now more about -tire future of, those
who associate with mankind on earth.
The ordinary person, has in the'ex-
ercise of his common sense come to
the conclusion that there -is no great
reason why the journey through this '
world into the next should be different!
for .the four -footed companion of man'
than for the biped.
The self-satisfied human of former
ages hugged to himself the idea: that
rte was begotten in order that lie
should utilize the rest of creation for
his personal benefit, and that if nec-
essary should kill, often by painful
means, those to whom he was greatly
indebted. -
We have now -reached a stage in'
Inman progress when we face reluc-
Cantly the question: What is the
domestic animal, and in what relation'
does man standin regard to the other)
members of the. family. Originally
'man is physically not on a level with
a large percentage of the animal ma -
tion, though scientific appliances may,
give humanbeings power over the
lest in the struggle for a place in the
Sun,
THE ETERNAL DOG.
By varius methods, not all of them
admirable, we take advantage of the
easily -awakened generosity of .the so-
' 'called lower creation until we say
they are domesticated—often deceiv-
ed—and'we invent the word "pet" as
expressing their eond'ticn. Then we
use them= -even abuse them—and in
the end we have to kill them, body
and soul, so as to make room for more,
us it is , rather trying to picture a
future life with a collection of "pets."
No doubt it is if we imagine a re-
surrection ether of human beugs or
, other animals which is that of a na-
tural body and not a spiritual' body.
The no wlife 'of the dog, for instance,
like that of. his master, will berecog-
nizable, bat for both decay will have
disappeared and life will be perfnr't,
spiritual and eternal.
FIDELITY. -What is there whish is incompar-
able with true life in the domestic
pet? Can we imagine a future exist-.
;ence in which we shall not be helped
to a nobler, an everlatingly develop-
. ing career by the examples and by
the companienship of seine of our
domestic pets'.
There are 'words which explain sere
tain qualities which cannot be elimin-
ated from the language of eternity,
and which are shown to us here by
the exaiiple of the domestic pet most
wonderfully. We reach that other
shore,: each of us,'iu a different class,
es it were, from others whom we have
lnet here:
We have to be developed; we have
to be drawn nearer, step by ,step, to
the perfection of some who guided uS
here, and gradually we get to God
Himself: On that other side one hopes
to find some wit ocompanioned'with
us, helped to purify our character on
earth. Will they not ;be yons{de to
shote us there, as' here, the meaning
of such a word as fidelity?
As far as one can -judge, I have
never had any reason for thinking
that finis is written on a domestic
}.st.. lire \llwIt it teases to breathe,
c o •nt the difficulty' of cornprehend-
x resurrection is to be attain -
r :.d yet honestly, the sal.:e-diffi-
e'.L-..r surrounds the re -living of hu-
manity. The effect of death is the
same for us all.
MORE CONSISTENT
I will not believe that the Creator,
by whatever means He acted, framed
the whole in order to tantalize the
part. It is not given to me to- under-
stand at present the why of eXistence,
but I have as much right to believe
as I do with regard 'to the domestic
pet as has my honest opponent.
It is more consistent with a God of
love, in my judgment, that He ,should
create what is lovable for eternity
than for time, A few days ago, after
I had spoken -on. this subject, one came
,
Ito ire and said that I had given much
think about though he was not yet
[to
in agreement with rue.
Outside Seville Cathedral, a good
many years :ago, I saw some rough
]outs teasing' to death a little dog,
which looked to me as just longing to
get into a quiet corner to die, I told
the fellows to leave the dog in peace,
but they would not, and at last I
knocked the ringleader down.
Ho and his companions were
troublesome, but eventually I got
there away, and, assisted by the potice,
I got the dog into shelter and to peace.
Which deserved best eternal life? Tho
cruel humans or the sutlering frdo-
mestie pet"?
My answer would be both—the hu-
mans so that they might receive the
pardon of God through the sacrifice
of Christ, the little dog because he
knew and had felt something of the
suffering 'of Christ and had shared
that, suffering.—Montreal• Standard..

How Your New Calendar is
Made Years in Advance
Referring to those who make 'our
calendars,' the London Daily Herald.
asserts that "the ordinary man does
not even know who they are.
"Ile turns to pocket diary or wall
almanac when he wishes to ascertain
the hour of sunset or sunrise, or tate
changes of the moon and the tides,
anti he does not guess that the in=
formation which he accepts as 'a mat-
ter of course is the outcome of six
years of co-operative work by the
leading astronomers of five nations.
"For an account of this truly re-
markable (though generally unre-
marked) example of the internation-
alism of science the London Daily
Herald is indebted to Mi•. Moses 13.
Cotsworth, director of the Interna-
tional Fixed Calendar League.
"On August 17, 1927, the •calcula-
tions for the year 1003 were begun by
eminent' scientists in the Greenwich
Observatory and the Nautical Al-
manac Office. •
"These men work out for all the
nations the; right ascension f and de-
clination of the sun, moon, and 84 of
the fixed stars at each of the 24 hours
in every' day.
"By August, 1928, these were paint-
ed and sent to the directors of the
national observatories in the United
States, Germany, .France, and Spain
to enable the astronomers of.sach of
these nations to begin their quota of
the work. • .
"No part is, duplicated. The United.
States astronomers work out the
eclipses of the sun and moon for all
the nations, and the hourly positions
of the planets and their satellites.
"In France the hourly positionsof
the polar stars are worked out, while
the salve work fpr other fixed stars is
done in Germany and Spain. •
"The work in these four countries
takes about 18 months. Greenwich
combines the results in the Nautical
Almanac for 1933, which will be print-
ed and issued, by the end of 1930.
"From this all the nations will be
able to work out for :each of their odyn
ports. the daily times and heights of
the tides. This information must then
be issued to the makers of calendars
not later than. January, 1982."
