Persian Queen Bans Foreign Jewels as National London—Hencefor`h • no foreign o"naments or jewels or other .articles,' of luxur"n Ca be worn' by the royal household of Teheran, according to the order jest passed by the Persian Queen. This gives a, direct blow to the fashion of imlporting costly dresses by Persian women, started after Teheran was dazzled by the gowns worn by Queen Suraya of Afghanistan when her majesty lately passed through Persia on her return Journey to Cabul. The Queen of Persia, however, holds different views, and at a public Dunbar held for the ladies of the court she denounced this additional item to the ,household bill, calling it unneeee&ary and superfluous.. "This extravagance," the Queen said, "besides preventing us from at- tending to more important matters, will conduce to the wealcness of the country and augment national poser ty. We lose little by leaving off the manner of adorning ourselves and grasping the habits of robing in simple raiments and ornaments, sup- plied by our country." Study Ape's Kinship to Humans Pictures of Arithropoicl Made by .I -laniard Savant 'Re- veal Beast Cannot: Stand Erect Cambridge, Mass.—The slaw mo• tion picture has helped to clarify the relationship.. between the anthropoid ape and man. The important point disclosed is that the apes are untab}o to stand wholly erect, although they are more noarly able than any other'anisnal, Man alone pos5ooses this attributp. The research which sets definite limits to the ability of the anthropoids in this respect was conducted by Dr, Edward Reynolds, director of the Department of Anthropology of PeabodyMuseum, Harvard College, The camera caught the gibbon, smallest of anthropoids, while run- ning, when, to the eye, he has appear ed to be almost completely erect, The camera "stopped'' the gibbon's move- menta sufficiently to Show that he was actually but little more than half erect as to thigh position. The skele- tons of these animals, Dr.- Iteynolda' says, are so shaped that the 'thigh can- not be extended and, in consequence, they stand about half of inan's exact- ness: The only animal other than the anthropoids which rises natnraiy on its hind legs to half erectness is the bear. The result of the studies," Dr. Reynolds says, "shows the modiftca- tion of, the human skeleton, which permit of the erect posture. Men alone possess the quality of being able to spring from their hind feet in any direction. This quality has been partially developed, but only partially, in the anthropoids. No sane man for a moment believes that man descended from the apes, but that they may descended from the same common ancestor." Another significant difference of the anthropoid from man is that none is able to oppose its thumb against its fingertips. The nearest approach is putting the side of the thumb against. the side of the finger. The orangou- taus Dr. Reynolds describes as having really four hands, using both hands and feet to grasp branches when swinging through trees, and being al- most incapable of rising on its hind feet. - • CHILDHOOD AILiENTS Can be Quickly Banished With Baby's Own Tablets. The ailments of childhood are many but nine -tenths of them are due to one cause and one cause only—a dis- ordered condition of the stomach and bowels. To quickly banish any of the minor ailments of babyhood and child- hood the bowels must be made to work regular and the stomach must be sweetened. No other medicine for little ones' has had such success as has Baby's Own Tablets. They banish constipa- tion and indigestion; break up colds and simple fevers; correct diarrhoea and colic and promote healthful sleep by regulating the functions of the stomach and bowels.
