The Orillia Packet -Times recently
-declared that it had feared that when
the. old Highlanders passed off the
scene that pipe music would cease but
was pleased to know that young men
-were taking up the pipes:- Had the
Packet -Times lived in Clinton it
would have been saved even that fleet-
ing fear for the Matches, father and
sons, have been making the skirl of
the pipes familiar to all for years, the
latter since they were in knickers and
blouses.

November llth comes on Sunday
this year. Sunday' ie a good day to
celebrate Armistice Day upon; as or-
dinarily the day we call Thanksgiving
. day is spent in feasting and sporting.
• But there is the, difficulty that eleven
o'clock in the forenoon, when it is ens.:
• tomery to observe the two minutes of
silence, is the hour at which all church
• services commence and very often
there are late comers who would dis-
turb the effect of the silent 'tribute.
They would be too busy getting in to
think of stepping in their tracks, as
• they should clo, for the two minutes.
' The several ministers of the churches
will have to take the matter up with
their congregations and ase that this
tribute to the heroic dead is observed.
* 5 5 *.
Goderich and Ashfield 'townships
will try out the early voting this
year, each holding nominations on
November 26th and elections on Dec.
"rlird. One would suppose that the
- Christmas 'season elections would not
effect the rural voters as much as
• those in towns, as it is, of course, a
•very busy season for business men
who are taking advantage of the per-
iod to make as large a turnover of
their merchandise as possible and
have little time to attend to public
• matters, but one of the chief reasons
for the'-ahange is probably the motor
• ear. So common has the use of the
'car become and so quiCkly does it do
its work that the farmer wishes, to
get all the work possible out of it be-
fore having to put it away for the
whiter, if indeed, he does put it away
at all, Anyway, around the first of
the year we are, likely to have now
and if we Tutve not the roads are in a
• bad state so that cars cannot run. The
' idea is to get the elections over while
cars can still operate. The rural wan-
' jcipalities are going ahead to try out
the new scheme while the urban coun-
cils still hedge it. One of the diffi-
culties is the fact that the financial
statement for the year is not yet com-
plete but no doubt this difficulty will
be overborne if the plan works out
' in other resperts.

What will Clinton do this year in re-
gard to a municipal election? We
; have heard some criticism of the lax-
' ity of interest which allows the of-
• fice of councilelr to go a -begging.
Clinton should, have enough public-
spirited citizens ready to serve each
year so that ratepayers might have a
choice when they go to the poles.
When a douncil is elected by accla-
• mation it may mean that they are the
,•choice of the -electors, or it may only
mean that the electors are paying so
little attention to public affairs that
they will allow anyone who will, take
the burden of transacting public. busi-
ness. Another practise we have heard
criticiZed is that of nominees for public
office arranging between themselves
as to who shall take the office. The
proper way, according to the critics,
is for the nominees to • allow their
names to go before the electors and
s allow them to decide who they wish
• to fill the offices. Such arrangements
As that, sited above are sometimes
madesto saVe an eldction and you hear
the expression. "I do not wish to cause
an election." The cost of an election
• in a town like Clinton is a small affair
- and it he,ppent occasionally that the
• man best fitted for a position is the
• man"who drops out to "save an elec-
tion." Civie interest should be so keen
that the electors would insist, upon
their nominees accepting the ,respon-
• sibility of allowing their names to
go before the people ' for aPproval.
You cannot, of course, compel any-
-000 to run for office but citizens could
make it clear that they wish their,
nomMees to do so. A keenly politest-
• ed election does net harm a munici-
pality. It acts upon the body politic
•s somethjng like vigorous exercise upon
the body, it stinuilates circulation,
quiekens tbe sensibilities, makes it
more alive.. •
