We should •Iilce to utter a protest
against the habit some people have of
blowing their motor horns in applause
rafter each number at the `open air
.band concerts, No doubt it is meant
as a compliment to the players but it
is anything but pleasing to lovers of
music. Those who come to the band
/concerts come to hear the band play
ten or a dozen pieces of imusic which
whey have spent hours in practising,
'not to hear that number of choruses
-from motor horns. It is really rah.
ter nerve-racking, after listening to a
• 'pleasing band nuuber,. to have one's
•ears "deeved" by a chorus of raucous
".motor horns, instruments which were.
, 'never meant to be musical.
We are sure the bandsmen would be
'much more complimented if the aud,
'ience would use the old fashioned
•method of applause, a hearty 'hand:
clap, and, who knows, we might add
not' a little to their pleasure by, nmak-
ing this applause hearty .and ready.
Anybody who. thought it couldn't
eget hot this summer had a chance -6
•change his mind over the week -end,
and probably did.
***
While we've been slaving away in
'the heat here` -many of our brethern
and sistern of the Canadian weekly
-press have been enjoying the breezes
•across the western prairies during the
•past week and reveling in the loveli-
-ness. of ,Jasper Park, where a few
...days were spent after the convention,
•which opened in Edmonton a week ago
'today. We don't begrudge thein an
'hour of it, however, and hope every)
one had a most enjoyable time.

Entrance results are out for Clinton
-and Blyth qentres and will be found on
'another page of this issue. We have
'had them posted up the past couple of.
'-days and probably the most popular
'place in the whole town has been that
-window, where the names of success
'ful students were . displayed. W,e.
'heartily congratulate the successful
-ones and we would like to encourage
'those who failed. There are few
-successful people in the world who
'have never made a failure, so we ad-
-vise the unsuccessful ones to cheer up
-and try again,, If - they have not
'applied •themselves as they might
`there is a new year in which to make -
;good, and if they have, and still fell
short of the desired goal, it will be
,easier next year, they.. will ,have a
-more thorough grounding ` and the
'next examination will find then at
`the head of the list, if they buckle
'$own to an honest effort. Edmond E.
Wince puts ;the case ina little verse
thus:-
You
hus:You are beaten to earth! Well, what,
•of that•?
Come up with a smiling face,'
/Vs nothing against you -to fall down
flat,.
But to lie there -that's a disgrace.
