The series of lectures given in Clin- ton during the • winter months, the • last one being delivered on Friday ev- •ening, by. the 'University Extension ,department, proved to be quite pop- ular, judging by the reguldr attend - ranee. But it seems to be the un- animous- opinion of those who 'did hear them that they were vastly worthwhile. They gave the people of Clinton who have too few opportun- ' ities, a chance of hearing educative topics discussed by experts. They 'were stimulating, to the -mind and were altogether enjoyable. -The Col- legiate board, under whose arrange- nient the 'lectures were given, deserve • the 'thanks of the community for their enterprise and we have heard'keyerai express the., hope that the seine ar- • rengennit may be carried out next • 'winter. . •• ..„ Varna ••• Misses Annie and Emily Keys, who -have spent the past few months at Oshawa and Niagara, have returned - to their home in the village. • . The roads are in bad condition just now on Blue Water highway, a team being icent continuously on the job over Sunday. If motorists would be content to go a little slower over the roads they would not break the crown during the wet weather; thus making it better for everyone. • • Wu NOT MANUFACTURE 'OUR OWN RAW MATERIALS To the Editor of The News -Record, Dear Sir: -The dram Growers; Guide of February the 15th, 1028, page 6, shows the picture of a 12 horse team, 'with mie driver and two men, harvesting, threshing and big - ging grain at the rate of 30 acres per day, at a cost of 70 cents per acre, (using --more horse -power and less man -power) as against 34.00 peracre in the old way. With the,. 69 -horse tem illustrated by the Grain Growers' Guide some months ago, handled by ono driver with two mounted outriders, who cracked the whip over the slow' or lifzy animals, triode the saving cost considerably greater than that' ef .rtc- complishing as much proportionately with one man -power as 5 man -power in the old way, and in some operations one man does what,10 men, osed to do. As compared with the man -power used this season to seed and harvest the Western crop of 500 million bush- els, new methods will inside of 10 years enable that same man -power to seed and harvest 2 billion bushels. Mr. Win. T. Lucas, U. F. A„ M.P's statement in the House of Commons, the other day is certainly' startling, "Dominion Provinces' of Canada are spending 10 million dollars annually on immigration, with the result that the prairie Provinces have lest the whole of their natural increase in population, as well as 38 per cent of the new immigration since 1921." Why continue that enormous expendi- ture for less than nothing in results-? Why not spend that amonnt, annu- ally- in the construction of pulp and paper mills, asbestos factories, metal smelters of all -kinds, factories to convert nickle, asbestos, iron, steel, copper, lumber etc., into finished pro- ducts ere in Canada, and make home employment for • every resident in Canada; 'as *Well' -as millions froih abroad? With Britain buying and importing all the raw materials she can, to be rnariufacturecl and exported, she pro- vides partial employment for her multitude of people. And the United States -is importing 50 per hent of the raw materials they are manufacturing. -Mich of this material is Canadian; it is there con- verted into finished productS, largely foiNhe benefitof keeping her own population employed at good wages. She doeS not risk having to provide for' them in some other way. Having more raw material and nat- ural -products than any country iii" the world, would riot that policy Make Canada the greatest and rnost1.popul- ous country in the world in the short - 'est reasonable space of time? Noth- ing but a quota law could stop the Canadian workman in the United States from coming Rama in millionS, and nothing but the transportation fares would stop. minim -id more cora- Jug from Britain. • . .
