YOUNG WIFE AND MOTHER ACCIDENTALLY SHOT • • Tragic Happening in Ashfield Township One of the saddest deaths that ever happened in this district oecurred at the home of Fred Ritchie, 12th con- cession of Ashfield, on Friday evening March 2nd, about 5.30 p.m., when the young wife and mother in the home lost her life aS‘the result of the ac- cidental discharge of a gun- in the hands of her husband; Mr. Ritchie had been troubled With black squirrels, which infested his housb and- barn, ' doing •much . -damage. So,, a few days previous to the' accident he borrowed Inc lath- er's gun to try to get rid of them, On the evening in question, hav- ing seen one, he had taken the gun out in an endeavor to get it,. but, • failing, to get -a shot at it, he came into the house bringing the gun with him and was still en the •look -out for the squirrel, (thropgh the window), when, in some Tinacconntable man- ner the gun discharged, the bullet • penetrating the heart of Mrs. Rit- chie, who expired immediately,, Med- • ical aid was soon summoned, but life • waspronouncedextinct. The two small sons, Rimsell, aged three years, and Keith, almost two, were in the room at.the time, but escaped injury. William Sloan, minister of, mines in the British Ccilunibia GeV ernment until' his recent -retirement owing to ill -health, died suddenly lent week in 'Victoria, one of that long list of Huron County boys who have pioneered' in the West and who have done so much to open: up that great Country. Mr. Sloan was born at Wingham and educated at Seaforth, and early in life went West, where he had a 'Pieturesque and colorful car- eer, He was 008 of those who went over that dreadful trail to Dawson CitY-in' the rush of 1896, and staked on the famous Eldorado 'Creek. He was eleetedlor two terms in the Com- mons for Comox-Atlin; and his breezy western •spirit and his.bngaging per- sonality impressed 'itself - Upon Ot- tawa. Mullett Township The death of Mrs. Humphrey Snell, which occurred on Sunday -week, came OS a great shock to her family and friends, She was a daughter of the late Thomas Fear and is survived by her husband, one daughter, Charity, and a brother, William Fear. The funeral was held on Tuesday of Iasi week and was largely attended. The services at church and graveside were conducted bY the Rev. A. E. Doan of Ontario street TJnited church, Clinton, with which she was connected and the pallbearers were: Arthur and Theo. Dale, J. Pope, George and John Mann and R. A. Roberton, Mrs, James Snell, Miss Mary Snell ancl"Mr, William Snell, all of London, were here for the funeral. Friends of Mrs, Chas.
