Let's start the New Year cheer- coin which, if we scatter with a lavish

-whom we have to do if we are cheer- four fold. Here's hoping that during
Sul and meet the tasks .of life with a 1928 we„arlay all cultivate that warm-
smile—if you can't smile, then grin ing faculty in a larger degree.
—and bear it. --
Some people seem to imagine that Following is a "prescription" for
a happy and prosperous new year, as
recommended by one .of our ex-
changes:
"1927,• just :Bossed, was good to
nearly everyone in our neighborhood.
By hard work, stripping a few cows,
slopping a Few pigs, setting . a few
hens, and gruelling a few chicks, ne-
cessary articles for the household and
the farm were pretty well paid up, so
that when the crop was ready tb
market there were not so many debts
to look after.' This kept the worry
bug away, and everybody was more
contented."
-they are under no obligation to be
,elieerful . unless they are doing con-
genial work and have everything go-
ing their way. "Howcan you expect
ane to be cheerful when I am tied
.down to this work I. hate?" they ask
with ',scorn, Or it is, "Hoy/ can you
expect mo to go about with a smile
when my heart is breaking over the
death of a dear one, or the illness of
someone I love, or with worry over
financiahtroubles?"
I know it is hard. The fact is that
. anything worth doing seems `to re-
quire a good deal of real effort. But,
look at it this way. What particular
virtue is attached todoing the easy
thing? Anybody can do. that. We
all enjoy the wholehearted. cheerful-
ness of the happy, carefree girl or
bey; the spontaneous' joy of youth.
What a dull world this would be with-
out it. It cheers and helps us, but it
:doesn't really hearten, us nearly so
much as the cheerful attitude toward
life of the man or woman who it
carrying heavy burdens and who re,
fuses to allow them to weigh down the
spirit, but who meets the world with
a smile. To meet such an one is a
tonic and gives uscourage to go and
do likewise.
I do not mean heartless, meaning-
less, forced mirth; but a, quiet deter,
niination not to allow our cares and
worries --and who is it that has not
enough of these to make the heart
'hea iy if one yielded to, the merino'
tion—to take all the joyout of liv-
ing. We can carr,, out a -resolution
-to make the best of things; we can
look on the bright side and we can if
Wn will often turn the bright side out,
instead of the dark.
We owe this much to the people.
-with whom we associate, those in the
hone, in . school, in business associa-
tions. Nobody likes to live with a
perpetual grouch..; But we owe it also
to ourselves for, no matter what sat-.
iafaetion one may. derive from the;
-nursing of a grievance or a pet .sor-
row there is infinitely more to be
gained from putting it under our
feet and refusingrto be dominated liy
