with having liquor other than pur-
chased on a permit, two Clinton. then,
arreslted yesterday afternoon in the
comfort -room in the C.N.R. station,
appeared 'before the city magistrate,
but were immediately released upon
the prompt payment of the v104 fine
imposed. Sergeants Pilgrim and
Runcimand madeethe arrest at 5.80,
when the men, produced the bottle in.

ing their way homewards, minus the
bottle and $104." '

The Home and School Club thor-
oughly enjoyed their little social ev-
ening -together on Tuesday evening
in the Collegiate auditorium.
The president, Mrs: G. T. Jenkins,
occupied the chair for the business
Part ' of the meeting, when plank were
discussed for the school concert, to
be held March 26th and•.27th.
At the conclusion of the routine
business there were .a couple of con-
tests which proved very interesting
and amusing, • Mrs. Wender contri-
buted a couple of piano selections
and- a sing -song was indulged in.
The refreshment committee did
itself proud in the furnishing of
good things to eat and a very plea-
sant social time was spent.
Two or three new members were
added to the roll during the even-
ing. , •
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
The Horticultural Society held its
annual meeting in the boatd roont'of

The council met in Holmesville on
Monday, Jan. ,Lath, at 11 o'clock, as
per statute. Reeve Haacke, Coun-
cillors Powell, Johnston, Jervis and
Corey, each signed the statutory de-
claration and took up their duties
like seasoned veterans. 'The . first
business was the reading and adop-
tion of the minutes, then clearing up
the correspondence. The letter from
the Good Roads Association asking
for membership fee was readand
fyled. The Hospital for Sick Chil-
dren wrote requesting a grant but no
action was taken. No action was
taken re S. R. ercI ath's claim for
damage to' his_ car. A. letter from
Mr. W. Mi. Morris, Sec: Tress• of the
Ontario School Trustees and Rate-
payers Association, outlining the
forming of an educational associa-
tion for the township was read and
•fyled. The report of Mr. 'J. E.
Hawes on the satisfactory condition
of the township roads was also or-
dered fyleel. Robt. C. Muir, , Chief
Engineer of Municipal Roads, wrote
calling the attention of the council
to various sections of the Highway
Improvement Act. This was fy ed
for future reference, In regard to
the drainage difficulties on the 7th
concession the clerk was instructed
to send some further information to
the severalparties' interested, which
it is believes' will settle the trouble.

„The body of, the late Frank A.
Tamblyn of Toledo, Ohio, was
brou-ght to this', villagefor interment
in the Union Cemetery. The funeral
took place from the United -church to
the Union cemetery. It is almost
fifty years since the late M'i. Tam-
blyn left for the west. He having
lived there until the, last; fifteen
years, when he :moved to Toledo. Ten
years' ago he visited his boyhood
home. M. Tamblyn leaves to
mourn their loss hie wife and three
daughters, the daughters all living in
the west. Also two :brothers, Thomas
in Coulter, Manitoba _ and Welling-
ton in
ellington"in Toronto, and one sister, Mary
in • Londesboro: Deceased was '78
years of age. The pallbearers were
James Watt,Charles Parsons, H.
.Sanderson, R. Caldwell', A. Jamison
and Fred Shokbrook.
The regular meeting of the W.M.
S. of the United church was held at
the parsonage on Wednesday after-
noon last with a splendid attendance
with the president, Mrs. Johnson,
presiding. Meeting -opened with
singing and prayer The reports for
the past year were given by the sev-
eral officers and • were quite encour-
aging. The correspondence was read
and minutes of last meeting were
read, followed by roll call. After
the usual business was dealt with
the meeting was left in charge of
Mrs. Manning, captain of group No.
"1. A new year hymn was sung and
Mrs. Tamblyn led in prayer and sev-
eral short prayers were given. Mrs.
J. Armstrong gave an interesting
reading -and the Study Book was ab-
ly presented by Mrs. Tamblyi This
was followed by a nleasing.duet by
Mrs. Brundson and Mfrs. .Manning.
Mrs. Manning gave a splendid read-
ing, "First Things First," and Mrs.
Crawford- gave a short reading. The
meeting was then favored with a
duet by bliss I. Nott and Miss Ida
Lyon, which was enjoyed. The most
interesting number on the program
was an address read by Mrs. J. S.
Carter and the presentation of a sil-
ver flower basket by Miss Lyon to
Mrs, J. Tamblyn. The following is

On Sunday morning, Jan. 11th, an
Arctic owl was noticed on the peak
of Mr. Jarvis M;eBride's barn by his
son, Percy. He at once took his 22
calibre rifle, cautiously made his
way to good shooting distance then
aimed aid with a solitary shot Mr.
Owl tumbled down to the ground.
The bird is all white except for tan
bands on the tips of 'the feathers.
The feathers and legs and under
wings were all white. Nib and tal-
ons black. With the wings stretched
the bird measured sixty-two inches

COUNTY NEWS
EAST WAWIA•N'OSH: Mr. Finlay
Anderson upon completing his thir-
ty-five years as Treasurer of the
Township of East Wiawanosh,' has
tendered his resignation. Ma. An-
derson celebrated his 91st birthday
on August 9th. last, seventy-five
years of which he has resided in
East Wawanosh. Besides being Trea-
surer, he has served on both the
township and the County Council,
giving in all'' forty-seven years of
service to his municipality, a record
of which he may feel' proud, and one
that will be hard to equal. Up to
the present time, a period of 63
years, East Wtawanosh has only had
three men to look after the treas-
urer's books, over half of that time
being served by Mr. Anderson.
BRUCEFIELD
The W.M,S• of Bruoefield United
church met for the first time this
year in the schoolroom on Wednes-
day afternoon with a good atten-
dance. The president, Mrs, Brem-
ner, occupied the chair and after the
devotional exercises the annual re-
ports of secretaries were given which
.were very. encouraging. The treas-
urer reported $500.00 having been
forwarded to the Presbyterial Trees-
BLYTH: Queen Street United
Church concluded the year 1930 with
gratifying success. At the annual
supper and congregational meeting
the financial reports showed a to-
tal of $5,008 raised from all sources.
The Women's Missionary Society
and Mission Band met their alloca-
tions in full, and the missionary and
maintenance fund is slightly in ex-
cess of last year. The receipts by
departments are as 'follows: Sunday
school, $719; young people, $121;
Women's Association, $399.38; Wo-
men's Missionary Society, $310;
Mission Band, $103; trustee board,
$774.74; stewards, $1,800; mission-
ary and maintenance fund, $1,161;
balance' on hand, $311. During the
year 28 new members were received
and five reproved.
