, H. O. B. PICNIC, •,
Officer O'McCreath Nabs the Hust-
ling Secretary of the Byron
Old Boys' Association of
Toronto.
It was .FFriday, the 20th, a week
later, than, the 13th, at 4 pin., the
.;young girls and old boys, exiles from,
Huron, gathered in Exhibitiolt park,
Toronto, for their annual picnic.
Secretary. Floody was first to arrive,
or among' the first:' A smile and:
Huron welcome he had for everyone.'
The book -and the tickets, particul-
arly the "latter=were conspicuous.
The Artful Dodger himself : couldn't
dodge Ed. Floody, But Floody; from
Blyth, didn't know what was coming
to him, but it ,came.
Over in the Transportation Build --
Ing long rows 'Of tables were Loaded
with, good Huron grub=the kind of
-food mothers taught their d'eughters
'to prepare back in the yesterday.,
And there was lots of it. And. we
'went at it ,just, as we used to do at
bees, and church socials yonder :in
the old Banner County of Huron.
• Exiles never forget home. There was
no 20 minutes for refreshment at
"the step" in. the transeportation
building. Ed. Floody was as nervous
as a railroad conductor of a (united
-train half an hour late. Hesensed
there was something doing—a-emash-
up or sopiething- down the line. Ev-
eryone wanted to talk to the -secre-
- tory to kill timid-- . till Judge Dun-
can arrived. Floody, wanted to get
one. with the program, but Mrs.
`Thomson and others kepthim talk-
eine—someone told him to .hold on,
there was to be an executive poet-
ing. He wondered what the dickens
an executive meeting was for.
Officer O'McCreath Nabs Floody
Judge E. J. B. Duncan, who by,
the way was the second president of
the Huron Otd Boys, arrived. The
Judge, supported by Judge McLaren,
sheriff, prosecuting attorney Proud -
foot, defending counsel Lee, all gown -
.'ed, were ready in an impoverished
court, for Officer O'McCreath and
'his prisoner, one Edward Floody.
'The officer; had the secretary in true
op style by the collar of the coat.
In the arrest Floody's straw lid flew,
but a by-stander grabbed it.
The complaint was laid by Peed -
den D. D. Wilson. The warrant,
signed, and sealed with a big red sear
read:
;The Huron Old Boys' Association,
Al Toronto, Canada, Province of On-
taria, County of York, City of Ta-
routo,
To wit:
Between The Members and Officers
-of the Huron Old Boy's Assdciation
of Toronto and Edward Floody..
"To the Sheriff:
WHEREAS proof has been made
before of THE HURON OLD BOYS'
ASSOCIATION OF TORONTO that.
EDWARD FLOODY has been chiefly
responsible for the organization and
maintenance for a period of some'
shown ie. eis advice to you to -plead
guilty fore we may say without any
hesitation that, it is the opinion of
this Court that" ho charge was ever
preferred against any man with more
reason or with stronger evidence in
support than in your case. '
Your record showsthat each time
an opportunity has offered for reach-
ing oat in certain directions,more
especially in the matter of obtaining
more members -and selling more At-,
Home tickets, you have grasped it
so quickly as to show that you were
on the alert continually ;with malice
aforethought and it is not surprising
therefore that you have''lended where
you findyourself to -day.
It id to be hoped you will realize
that the sentence about to be
Passed ; upon you is, considering all
the circumstances, such , as in your
calmer mgments will be considered'
as not greater: than the conditions
warrant. e
The sentence ofthis Court, from
whieh there is io • append, is that
you take this key and insert it :in
the small 'aperture made for that
purpose in the door of the instrument
known" as a "Grandfathers' Clock,"
and that you . will there and then
wind the said clock and repeat this"
operation as often as may be items -
sexy so that Meting way you will "do
tune" for the rest of your natural
life, and you are so accordingly sen-
tenced.
The inscription on the . beautiful
clock, engraved on. in brass plate,
reads:
Presented' to Edward Floody by
the Huron Old Boys' Association
of Toronto, in recognition of hie
execptional seevices''as Secretary of
the Association from its inception in
the year 1900.
"He rose to honor and to fame, •
Through loyalty; to Huron's name,"
•BEd. Ploody :couldn't carry the
clock • around with him, so they pre-
sented him with a solid geld pin in-
ecri'bed: "Huron -Old Boys' Associa-
tion of Toronto. (Huron County.
crest) ' Edward Floody; in apprecia-
tion of efficient service -1900-1930."
The ladies presented Mrs. Floody
with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
Edward Flecdy in accepting the
clock and pin, in defiance of the
sentence' of the court, said he would
continue to sell tickets to the judges;
the sheriff, the prosecuting attorney
and others. eerie bore up well under
a trying ordeal for airy man. But
the emotions nearly gained the upper
hand when he graciously thanked the
ladies for the beautiful bouquet of
Lowers presented to Mrs, Floody.
- Notes
Au 'old-timer from Seaforth was
at the picnic . swaping yarns with
other old-timers — Jamas Wright
who was e. school mate with. Thomas
A. Edison, the electric wizard, in the
village of Vienna, Elgin county,
Judge Duncan fumbled around his
pockets for the clock key. First he
looked at Officer O'MeCreath, then
at the sheriff, then at Gleecereath,
again. He wasn't sure which one
pickeci his pocket. But the severe
look he gave the eop, one oould tell
where his suspicions rested, '
The comedy -drama,, moved quick-
ly. Ed. Floody wasn't given a
chance to inspect the grandfather's
clock. He got a look at it that was
all. Finally he came back to "'the
court" • to examine, and to behold
someone had "pinched" the clock.
Perhaps it was the judges, the sher-
iff, the cop or Doug. Wilson. Time
flies ---land so did the clock. It
was found afteerwards at 58 Close
avenue, where Edward Flecdy, re-
sides at home.
The Broom Football MTatch was
one of the best features of the
afternoon. Twelve ladies on each
side 'were captained by Mrs. G. C.
Young and Mrs. H. B. Stowe. After
a hard fought battle, a truce was
arranged and each lady was pre-
sented with a broom and a bottle of
malt vinegar.
