At Ottawa Mr. Bennett attacks the

Yes, and The Signal attacks pat-

party newspapers begin " to attack

DEPUTATION -ASKS.:,-GOVERN-
MENT FOR LARGER AP-
PROPRIATION FOR
GODERXCH HARBOR
- A deputation ,from /Goderich wait-
ed on' the Minieter of Public works,
J. C., Elliott, at Ottawa on Monday,
asking a larger appropriation for
harbor work and were given a syin•
pathetic . hearing. 'The deputation
was comprised of Mayor J. H. -J.
McEwan, Town . Clerk'S L. Knox, 'G G.
L. Parsons, J. W. Fraser and several•
members of the town council, The
deputation was ' introduced by- Mr..
[George Spotton; member for North
Huron, while Mi. T McMillan, mein-
ber for South Huron rMr. F. G. San-
derson, member forSouth Perth,
Hon. Hugh Guthrie, KC., member
for South Wellington, and C. A.
Roberton, M,L.A., for North'/Huron,
were also present.
M(syor MaccEwan thanked .the
Government very heartily and Holt.
M,r. Elliott particularly for the work
done en Goderich harbor in the past,
and Hme expressed the earnest hope
that the Government could see its
way dear to completethe necessary
work on the inner harbor as °soon
as possible: He pointed out. that
now is an opportune time to remove
Ship Island, .with the big Boon'
Dredging Company plant being still
at Goderich completing other im-
portant dredging contraets..
He indicated that.. Goderich would
favor, if necessary a postponement
of the completion in concrete. of the
north and south piers for a start
to be made on the island removal
scheme, which he estimated to cost
$150,000,: to $200,000.
Mr. Elliott explained the detail of
the work planned for Goderich har-
bor this year, for which an item of
$100,000 has been placed in the train
estimates. The ' minister predicted
that Goderich will become a great
commercial port, much greater even
than it has been in the past. The
Government, ,be added, would be
pleased to do all in its power for
the ,Goderich'harbor.• '

WHY MERCHANTS TURN GREY
The following letter has been
handed us by one of our town mer-
chants, but we feel sure it is not a
personal experience. Farmers in
old Huron County,aren't made of
this sort of stuff. But if it ever
happened anywhere it's funny: -
"Dear Sir, -
I have your-- statement showing
that I owe you $79.60. I air enclos-
ing cheque for $5.00, for which
please send the a receipt. I am sorry
that I cannot pay more at present as
money is quite scarce right now.
My living expenses are very high and
I find it hard to get along. I will
try to send you another payn'ent of
$5.00 when I sell my hay in July, I
cannot pay yen more at that time
as ray daughter finishes college this
year and that costs a heap. I night
add we have had to build a shed for.
the Ford so as to put our new car
in the garage. I have promised the
niissus a trip to Niagara in the
fall. I feel this is corning to her as
she .has been working quite hard.
We cannot go sooner on account of
having the house remodelled some.
Farmers around here are in a hard
place financially with the price of
gasoline as it is at present. Yours
truly."
