A ticket and 98c entitles you to a flight. Have any Clinton citizens paid as much as a ten spot. for a joy ride in an aeroplane? At least a few have done so and no doubt felt that they were getting•the worth of their money. It does not seem so long ago, although it was in 1919, that Pilot Fred Gillies, the first man to bring an aeroplane to Clinton, came up from Kit- chener and took passengers up at $10 per head. He came again in 1926 and cut his price in two. Mr. Gillies is not a stranger in Clinton. For severalyears prior to 1915 he was in business here, in partnership with the late Mr. Paxman, they having built the serviceable garage which preceded the service station on Ontario Street, now occupied by the Super -Test people. He was married here, Mrs. Gillies being the daughter of Magistrate S. J. Andrews, and the family frequently visit in town. Leaving here in 1915 Mr. Gillies went to Waterloo where he also engaged in garage work. He had been turned down for infantry and cavalry work in the Great War but was finally accepted early in 1918 for air service, taking training at Borden. The end of the war came before his training was completed and he decided to continue his air work, taking out papers as a pilot and instructor. He has just recently successfully passed an in- struction test rated 1-B., being one of two men holding this standing. He has been connected with the Instruction Camp at Borden for years and has a record of 4000 flying hours without an accident. It was he who introduced commercial 'flying into Western Ontario. He has conducted a flying school at Kitchener and later was instructor for the Kitchener -Waterloo Flying Club. He is now manager of the Stratford Air Port. Mr. Gillies was the first man and we can all remember how thrilled ed up in it.
