THE CLINTON NEWS -RECORD
z'OF INTEREST TO YOU
AND VIE,
Sattwday, July lst, is " Canada's
)66th birthday. Many, many happy
returns of the day is our wish for
• • • .•
' The heat and drought, assisted by
grasshoppers and other pestswhich
prey on grain, allay save the nations
the trouble of cutting down acreage.
. • « •
Anyway,while millions Id people
'in • the world never 'really have e-
nough to 'eat from the day of birth
to the 'day of death, 1t would seem
that the curtailment of the growing
of wheat need not yet be effected.
What we need is some way of dis-
•'tributing it a little better.
••.
"It is lovely and, cool in 'here,"
*remarked a caller who dropped into
the office yesterday afternoon. We
looked at the thermometer *and it
registered just two degrees below 90.
You can imagine how it felt outside
•tet that time. A cool breeze -sprang
up and the mereuay fell several de-
-:.grecs in a few minutes.
• • • r •
Grasshoppers are threatening the
•-crops in the west. Why not use
• : deadly poison gas for 'the 'destruction
of these and like pests which threat-
en at times to starve man off the
earth? Poison gas is a devilish in-
vention when turned to the destruc-
- 'tion of human beings but it might,
one would think, be used in defence
• o4 humanity.
The lights went out as an interna-
tional convention rose to sing the
National Anthem; in Toronto the
'other evening and flashed on again
QS the organist left the mute organ
and went to the piano and struck up
the Star-spangled Banner, Surely
there couldn't be an annexationist
in charge of those electric Light
switches.
A terrible to-do has been stirred
• up about the slight lengthening of
the school term, throwing the writ•
ing of examinations into July, But
until a comparatively few years ago
the Public schools never closed until
the end of June. As for the first
week in July being so much hotter
than the last week in June it is
something you can't be sure of. The
- :first week in June this year was
probably hotter than anything we
shall have in July, and the last week
- hasn't been exactly chilly.
• • • •
Da you know anything about a
"Depression Plant?" Well, we were
• presented with one the other day. A
Tormer.member of the staff fixed it
up for us. You take a lump of soft
coal, mix up a solution of liquid blue-
ing, salt and water and pour over it,
• then let it stand for a few hours and
• -a sorb of frost -like growth will come
• out all over it. By putting on some
red ink or something in the way of
color this will show in the "plant."
The beauty iaf this is that you can
use the coal as a table ornament in
the summer and as a means of boil-
ing the kettle in the winter. Prob-
ably that is the reason it is named
"Depression Plant," it is a conserva-
tion of resources. So far we have
seen no developentent of the plant
suitable ler use as a bride's bouquet,
nor can you wear it as a buttonaire,
' but as a simple little experiment it
is all .right, and when you get your
bloom look at it through a magnify-
ing glass.

The action of the Tdronto Con-
• Terence of the United Church in pas-
sing a resolution favoring the na-
tionalisation of banks, etc., has- a-
roused a lot of comment here and
there. But we need not allow our -
solves to become too excited about
it. It was a 'case of blowing off
steam, 'Ministers are in the way of
seeing a lot of the seamy side of
life, as they come and go amongst
their people, especially those who
' have been ministering to those in
poor circumstances the past two or
three years, and ib is hardly to bd
wondered at that they should feel
that there is something radically
wrong with the system'which allows
one than to starve while another is
sitting pretty and hanging on to his
fortune and waiting, patiently, until
lie sees another good chance :of mak-
ing a Tet of money. And if these
men should gat a bit excited and
pass .a foolish resolution or so no-
body need be no much surprised.
The capitalist system would be all
right if it were managed by men
who "loved their neighbors as them-
selves" and could be depended upon
• to see that all workers had a fair
• deal and nobody "hogged" toe many
profits. The system provides that
the men and women who are gifted
for leadership are -given a chance to
use their ' talents.; ' it provides that
the men and women who are willing
to vrork hard to get on in life are
• suitably rewarded and it provides
that the pian who is lazy and shift.
less never gets anywhere, and when
times are harder than usual he and
his inust be looked after by the
thrifty. But the weakness of the
system is that hi times of depres-
Mon, such as the present, oven -those
who are willing' to work cannot find
it and that many a thrifty, indus-
' trious man is reduced to penury
through no fault of his own.
But would eveyythingbe lovely
,...even under socialism;? ' We doubt it;
