HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Clinton News Record, 1932-05-19, Page 5OF ` INTEREST TO YOU ,' AND M3E The world is surely in a state of • •confusion ' and turmoil when the premiers of two countries have been •.shot to icleath within the past fort- 'night. Wou`dn't.it seem that the Lind- berglis had 'trouble enough without somebody trumping up a lot of fake clues about the recovery of their kid- napped child, causing the father • needless journeys and useless ex- - pense. The Exeter Times -Advocate last week installed a new Babcock -Optic, us press, on which it will fits doubt 'be able to print even abetter paper - than in the past. Mee congratulate the Times -Advocate igir-,this sign of • prosperity and hope it may continue. One of the best recipes for success • That I've come across," says `Sir Har- • ry Lauder, "is to keep the other folk --good-tempered and happy." That is all right for Sir I•Iarry, that's his "business' •and he gets well paid 'for 'it. But if the rest of us didln't hustle •.er•ounel and earn a living, 'sometimes so'inebody in the process, who'd pay high prices for tickets to get into :halls to hear him crack jokes and • make people good-natured and hap- • py? We suspect it was the humorist, not the philosopher that spoke that time. • s a s Why cannot, the'police in the Uni • ted States, who ate supposed to be •••trying to capture the kidnappers and • murderers of the Lindbergh baby, r go about their work quietly without 1 publishing every stove in the news- papers. They ought to kick every reporter who approaches them higher than a kite and get on with their work. And the newspapers ought to haves aense sf pul jlic >jesponsibility t and abandon their senseless system of .` printing every item of news avail- ; • able, regarding the contemplated movements of the authorities, thus r warning the underworld in time to • prevent success. If the police autho- rities ever apprehend those crimi- hats it will be more by good lock theft, .good management, The Doukhobors are threatening tc leave Canada if they cannot go along •stud do just as they please. ;. WelI, 'perhaps it would be just as well. We 'have never come across such a scene but it must be rather startling to the • descendants of staid old Anglo-Saxon • stock to meet a company of these • naked folk• parading a public high- way. We've been wearing clothing for so many generations that most of us take it for granted that they'll be worn. Some people in Canada have not been wearing so many gar- muttis Ti'or su:h abundant garments c. as formerly, (we :tow refer to tate ladies), hot seeing people in the nude, that is, absolutely, is still sontethities of a 'shock to us. ', The tIOuble began when this Donk- 1 /miters were givelt concessions bit dom- ing to this country, such as•dreedonr from military service that native-born citizens, the descendants of those who settled this country first, do not •-enjoy. No person should be accepted as a 'citizen of Canada who is not • 'willing to eenfcrm to the laws and customs •of the country. Laws which are good enouph for the grand-chil- ••dren of our grandfathers are good enough for anybody coining from any .other land. Pew events in modern times have aroused public sympathy and indig, ' nation as has the kidnapping and ':subsequent murder iof- the twenty- ' months' old son of • Col. Chas, A. ' Lindburgh. Surely it was the Arch :Fiend himself who planned the ab- rcluction of the 'helpless child from his ..crib in his parents' home, the brutal murder of the, child, which it is sup- posed, immediately followed, and 'then the negotiating for ransom, 450,000 of which was paid, while all • :the 'time the body of the murdered babe lay within a few miles of the Monte from which it had been stolen, • and the parents were encouraged to believe that the babe was safe and would be returned to them. During the long weeks' in which the • distracted lather searched far his -missing son the police were supposed to be doing their best, but the police failing to get any clue, he applied to the underworld for assistance, the • police -making the plea that the child • might be injured if the :search. and negotiations were 'not carried on • carefully. This fear "is now Taney- , anov• el. the worst -has happened, not a • shred of consideration is 'trove due - anyone, the kidnappers'hading showr themselves criminals' of the deepes+ cast. If the pili,ee-cannot now trace the perpretrators df this' dasterdly crime it is time for the great 'mnajor- " ity of the citizens Of %be'United Stat- es to arise ancl-.demasid a change in the administration of law and justice. ' Surely they are not going tb admit that the criminals sof the nation are in charge of its affairs or that they • are -helpless against them. A mother was discussing with he- • thtughter the qualities' of men. "Oh" ;aid •,the .daughter' impatiently, "but i hey have no self, cohtrcll" "All the hotter,"'relilied';'the mother, "I£ they lrad there would , be • a great many mdro'Spinsters. Ant ober is being held next week to Windsor and Detroit, which will, no, doubt, prove equally popular. The News -Record has been telling the Canadian National all along tbat it ought to arouse itself and fight for its busingss and just see what happens "when it begins to take our advice., 1. 1CARD OF TIIANMS .... 50c MEMORIAL VERSE PER LINE .. , ...10c l _.
