'Phe total area 'burned was only one six- teenth of the area burned in 1923, a year of comparable hazard. There are many factors contributing to make possible this record: for ex- ample, the standard of personnel and their training qualifications is on a muoh higher level than it was eight years ago. Another factor is the steady building up of permanent services, improved organization, look- out towers, telephone lines, radio sta- tions, etc,, the greatly increased supply of fire fighting apparatus a- vailable, notably fire fighting pumps; the greater efficiency of aircraft notably in transporting men and e- quipment to fires in isolated regions. But one factor, greatly lamented in 1923, namely, the lack of public sup- port has greatly altered. Today, the public are solidly behind their forest fire rangers. Last year, in Ontario alone, the public reported 518 fires, at no charge to the forest service. In fact the public reported more fires than either aircraft or fire rangers and almost as many as the lookout towers. You are er) isobedi nt Pers i n Do you protest, and say thatt you're not a very disobedient; per- son? Be patient, for a moment, and wo"shall see. Look at the advertisements which you see in this newspaper, ,,and in other newspapers. Most of them bid you do something some- thing which, if done, would be advantageous to you, as well as being profitable to the advertiser. But do you always obey these adver- tisers? You do not! And what is your excuse? Take your teeth, by way of example? Are you doing what you can to prevent .er delay their decay and loss. If you are like most persons you are not. Yet you are being urged by advertisements to use regularly a product which, if used regularly, would keep your mouth and teeth in a really good health condition; and would enable you to keep your teeth sound and keep away toothache. It isn't the price of the product which steeps you from using it it's just' plain inertia and procrastination. Then there's an electric tsr other kind of washer—this by way of example—able to: be purdhased on the instalment plan. The advertiseinents bid ,you buy it, and: give you good reasons why you should use this labor-saving, life -prolonging mechanism. Has every man and every woman known to you obeyed the demi-needs of the advertisements of this washer? They have not. And their resistance cannot be put down to disbelief. The explan- ation is; Most of us are shameless procrastinators --putting off, putting off, putting off all the time. When you read advertisements, see in then the untiring effort of manufacturers and institutions to cause you to dc, right things. Take the life insurance companies, by way of example: Their advertisements urge all of us to insure our lives. Yet how stub- born istost of us are! We resist the biddings of the advertisements and the canvasses of the salesmen of life insurance. We defer Be- ing the obviously right thing, often for years!
