Washing Machine
Production
According to the officials of the
Western Ontario Region of the War-
time Prices, and Trade Board, time
extensions have been granted to man-
ufacturers who hold. permits for the
production of washing machines.
Sinee May 1943, permits for the man-
ufacture of 23,000 machines were
granted; but up to Ante 30 only
15,538 machines were turned out of
Canadian plants. None of the com-
panies completed their allocation for
the first six months of the year and
all have asked for an extension of
time. Labour shortages and wartime
manufacturing difficulties have made
it impossible for the manufacturers
to fill their quotas.
In December, 1943, permits were
issued for the production of 18,100
machines by Mareh 31, 1944. Early
in March, 1944, authority was given
for the production of another 5,000
machines. At that time each com-

Hot Air Furnaces
New regulations concerning the re.
lease of hot air furnaces have been
issued by the Wartime Prices and
Trade Board. Owners of new homes
having a permit from the controller
of construction may obtain certifi-

naces, provided the house is under
construction. Officials of the Prime
Board emphasize, however, that cer-
tificates of essentiality are still
necessary for obtaining delivery of a
furnace. Those certificates may be
obtained at the nearest local or
regional office o& the Board.
Hot air furnaces to replace other
types of heating equipment are not
being released at present. Applica-

=SNAPSHOT GUILD
SNAPSHOTS FROM THE HOME FRONT Bfl
If you Will have your subject look directly at the camera, you'll get more
of a "true-to-life" picture. That's the kind the Servicemen like best,
'THEY tell us that snapshots from
home more to the boys in
The ,Services than almost anything
else we can send them. Of course
this isn't a bit hard to understand,
because everyone likes to look at
snapshots. But when a boy has been
awayarom home perhaps for months
—well, he's just plain starved for .a
glimpse of the home folks and home
surroundings. And it's up t0 us at
home to provide that glimpse.
What sort of pictures shall we
send? Well, of bourse, simple, infor-
mal snapshots are usually best. And
he'll want, probably most of all, pic-
tures of his girl—or his wife -of
Mother and Dad, of kid sister or
brother, perhaps some of his friends..
And he'll want these pictures to
show hisfolks carrying on with
their everyday affairs, doing the
simple, familiar things that made up
their life' when he saw them last.
Mother going about her housework,
or doing the baking, or feeding the
chickens, or perhaps Just starting
out for a waik. Dad busy with his.
Pipe and: his newspaper, or checking
oyer his ishing-gear, or planning his
garden. Jaid brother can be playing
ball, flying a kite, or riding a bike.
And 'so on. Just' cheerful little
glimpses o3 real people, his ;Maple,
doing the .real, homey things of
everyday living.
These are just a few random sug-
gestions, of course. Many other sit-
uations
ituations will readily come to mind
when you really got down to busi-
ness. But be casual about it.
Here's something you might try:
If you want your picture to carry an
extra -special touch --to be personal-
ized, as it were—ask your subject
to look smack into the lens of the.
camera. Then, when your Service-
man gazes soulfully at the likeness
of his girl friend, he'll be delighted
to discover that She is looking right
straight back at hien. If you tell her
in advance what you aretrying to
get, she'll be habpy to oblige with
just the right expression. The re -
suiting picture •might very well be
called a "speaking likeness"—to use
an oiit^time' phrase—and he'll carry
it with him through thick and thin,
wherever he may go.
And, just' by way of reminder, film
10 still scarce, of course, so it mustn't
be wasted in careless, random shoot-
ing. But, if you'll Just sit sown and
think nattei's over for a few min-
utes before making your pictures,
any number of good, workable ideas
will occur to you, and you'll be able
to make the very best use of what-
ever film you are aisle to get.
