and Mrs. 0. Rapson held the lucky
ticket. A box- ofblack berries donat-
ed by Mrs. G. Smith was won by Mrs.
C. Tebbutt. A. box of red berries
donated by Mrs. R. Smith was won
by Mrs. G. Cornish.,
Our next meeting will be held on
August 2nd. The Roll Call will be
answered by buying a ticket on a
quiit,whieh is, to be drawn on that
day. .
The hostesses will be Mrs. B. Lov-
ett, Mrs. E. Blake, Mrs. E. Farquhar
and Mrs. J. Gibbing's. Two quilts
were quilted during the afternoon,

PORTER'S HILL
The July meeting of Porter's Hill
Unit Red Cross was held' at the home
of Mrs. Les Cox on Monday. Four-
teen members and a visitors were
'present. The meeting was opened by
the president, Mrs. Alvin Betties,
with a hymn' and the Red Cress
prayer. Minutes of : the last meeting
were read and adopted. Two quilts
ware quilted and quite a number of
knitted articles were brought in.
Sewing was received and more hand-
ed, out. Tickets were sold on a gift
donated by Mrs. Alvin Betties and
won by Mrs. Allen Betties. The
August meeting will be held at the
]come 'of Mrs. 'Will Cox.

been holidaying at the home of• his.

Dr. Edward Wilford,, Canadian -
born doctor, has just been honored in
Chengtu on his 60th birthday, when
the Chinese government gave a'ehe-
que for, $100,000 (Chinese money) to
start a subscription fora memorial
to his life and .work in China. Three
U. S. doctors gave $100 in United
States currency; other, subscriptions
including one .of $50,000 all of which
will be used for the purchase of
radium and deep X-ray unit to sup-
plement the work at the Chengtu
University and hospitals, where Dr.
Wilford has been at work during
most of his missionary career,
Dr. Wilford was born in 1884, at
Blyth, Ont., where his father was a
local preacher. According to his
brother, A. H, Wilford, young Ed-
ward 'was early fired with 'mission-
ary enthusiasm, but lacked' the
qualifications for a preacher, It was
his failure as an orator that led him
