A chartered bank is the custodian not only of your money
on deposit but also of your secrets concerning that money.
ACHARTEERRED bank is an institution where the
details of your bank account are kept secret.
It is called "chartered" because its permission to
do business and the conditions and restrictions
under which it may do business, are contained in
a charier granted and kept up-to-date by parliament,
the finest democratic free institution of government
that man has yet devised. This charter is an Act
of Parliament laying down all of the conditions
which safeguard your money.
Ten competing chartered banks are the very
opposite of a State Monopoly such as would come
about if all the bank§ were rolled into one by nation-
alization. Under State Monopoly, if you failed to get
accommodation at the one bank, you could not go to
any one of nine others to seek it. You can today

Maple Syrup Made in
Wingham last week
Winters are few in this part of the
country when maple syrup can be
made in the month of January but
that is exactly what took place on
ithe Henderson farm at Wingham Jun -
i ction
un-fiction last week.
Russell Henderson has always been
noted for the quality of the syrup he
'produces, just as his father was when
,he was more active on the farm. He
is also noted for the fact that he is
'right on the job early in the season.
This year he beat the gun by quite
some time as he boiled down last week
some excellent quality maple syrup.
The trees were tapped on Wednes-
day and the run of sap was not too
bad. Russell says however that if he
had tapped the Saturday previous he
,would have had much greater success
However, he did all right as he has a
nice supply for his useon and. We
had a taste of his. January product
