Raise $250 to Aid War
Service Work
Upward of $230 was realized for
the Clinton War Service Committee
in a Lions Club sponsored ticket draw
held in the town hall last Wednesday
night when 10 prizes were drawn for.
The major prize of ton of coal was
won by Gordon Jenkins, Clinton, R.R.
2; the second, two cords' of wood, was
captured by W. H. Cudmore. Crates
of oranges were won by V. D. Fal-
coner, Clarence Connell, Clinton, and
Mrs. R. M. Scott, Seaforth. Fowl
went to other fortunate ticket hold-
ers.' The Lions committee in charge
included F. 0. Ford, chairman; R. E.
Holmes, A. E. Middy, G. M. Counter
and. G. H. Jefferson.
A bingo game for the same patri-
otic purpose was under auspices of
the Legion and in charge of J. It,
Butler, N. W. Miller and T. G. Serib-
bins, realizing upwards of $100,.
Music was' furnished by :Art orCh-
estra with 0. Rapson as leader and
L. W. McDonald as pianist.

New Post Office Hours
The Post Office Department has
authorized that the_lobby of the Clin-
ton Post Office be opened.at 8:00 a.m.
instead of 6.00 a.m. and closed at 8.00
p. m. instead of 9.00 p. m. as at pre-
sent.
Husband 'Killed' in Italy
Mrs. Robertson has been advised
by the casualty officer at Ottawa
that her husband, Pte. Jelin Stones
Robertson, formerly a'meniber of the
Perth Regiment, has been killed on
active service in Italy. He liad trans-
ferred from the Perths some time
ago. Pte. Robertson's wife, is the
former Miss Myrtle Ashton, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. 'John ; Ashton of
Clinton, and' they have one daughter,
Jacqueline. Pte Roberton is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. William Robertson
of 51 Water street, Stratford.

Mother of Clinton Woman
Passes
Mrs. John J. Jones died at her
home, concession 2, Delaware Town-
ship, on Saturday. She was 74 years
old.
The former Jessie Nugent, she
was born in London, Eng, daughter
of the Isle Mr. and Mrs. William
Nugent. She came to Canada at
the age of one year, spent her early
life in Toronto and since her marriage
resided at her farm home in Delaware
Township.
She was a member of Littlewood
United church and was a supporter
of all church organizations,
Surviving besides her husband
are two daughters, Miss Edith, of
Toronto, and Mrs. Evelyn Brock
Olde, of Clinton. One brother,
Ernest E, Nugent, of -London,' also
survives.
Clinton Well Represented in
Honors List •
The Town of Clinton was recog-
nized in the King's New Year's honor
list Saturday, The British list also
included the names of Canadians, Er-
nest Herbert Cooper. native of Clin-
ton, Ontario, was knighted. He is a
prominent industrialist who has been
in Britain since 1908. Mrs. E. A.
Sorby, Winnipeg the,, former Emma
Higgins of Clinton, now Major in the
Canadian Women's Army Corps over-
seas; was awarded the Order of the
British Ehnp4re. And Wing Cord -
mender Kenneth Roland Patrick, R.
C. A. F., Wireless School, Clinton,
officer commanding, was also award-
ed the Order of the British 'Empire.
Sir Ernest Cooper, native of Clin-
ton, knighted by King George in the
New Year's honor, is a brother of Mr.
A. T. Cooper of Clinton, and Col.
John A. Cooper, of Toronto, officer
commanding the 198th Buffs Battal-
ion C. E. F., in the First Great War.
Sir Ernest served as a subaltern in
that unit, bath in Canada and over-
seas, having returned from England
to join the'Battalion at Camp Borden.
A daughter of Sir. Ernest, Mrs.
Collin Rutherford and her two sons,
are war guests, in Toronto.

In Hospital After Fall Down.
Stairs
Mrs. Angus McLeod, Joseph street,
is in the Clinton Public Hospital .re-
ceiving treatment for a cracked
vertebra in her neck. She had just
started down stairs early New Years
eve when she tripped and fell all the
way down, and as a result cracked
a vertebra in •her neck, and is also
suffering from bruises. Mrs. McLeod
will be obliged to wear a cast for
several weeks, but it is hoped she
will improve rapidly.

ing to be held at the Parsonage on
Tuesday evening, January 18th, The

The Presbyterian W. M. S. held a
Candle -light meeting on December
16th, at the home of. Mrs. Roberton,
with a good attendance. The living
rooms' were nicely decorated with
lighted Christmas Candles which ad-
ded a festive air to the occasion. The
meeting opened by singing Hymn 170
after which Mrs, Roberton led in
prayer. The Christmas Story as re-
corded in Luke 2nd, Chapter was read
by Mrs. Shaddock. Christmas read-
ings were given by Mrs. Fox and Mrs.
Stevenson.

President, Mrs. D. J. Lane; President,
Mrs. Roberton; Secretary...Mrs. Snider
Treasurer, Mrs. Wilson; Glad Tidings
Secretary, Mrs. Roberton; Pianist,

A number of Christmas carols were
sung and an exchange of gifts; fol-
lowed by singing "Silent Night" Miss.
Roberton closed the meeting with
prayer.
A picnic lunch was served by The
hostess and friends.

Women's Institute
According to Mr. Cooper, his knight-
ed brother is serving as co-ordinator
of industries for Northern Ireland
'n the. British Government but main-
tains a residence in London. Sir,
Ernest is widely known as a Mason,
being past master of Canada Lodge,
A. F. and A. M., and past grand
master of the Grand Lodge of. Eng-
land.
Working with Sir Ernest is Mr.
Willis Cooper, son of Mr. and Mrs.
A. T. Cooper of Clinton, who made a
visit to his home here only a short
time ago.
Mrs. E. A. Sorby, who received
the Or'd'er of the British' Empire, is
the former Emma Higgins, daughter
of Mrs. Higgins of Whitby and of the.
late Ben Higgins of Clinton. Major
Sorby is a graduate of Clinton Cbl-
legiate Institute; she also • has the
distinction of being the first C.W.A.
C. to go overseas, and, while there
arranged and organized the posting
of more C. W. A. C.'s. Her husband
who is also in the services, is over-
seas.

R. E. Diehl, Passes
Funeral services for R. E. Diehl,
64, of Westbrook, formerly of To-
ronto, who died in Kingston' General
hospital Dec. 28, were held Thurs-
day at the McGill funeral home,
Bioor St. W., with interment in Pro-
spect Cemetery. Rev. C. A. Mustard
officiated.
Born in. Clinton, Mr. Diehl lived
in Toronto for 52 years until he
moved to Westbrook in 1936. .He.
was associated with Burt Business
Forms Ltd, for the past 30 years.
Ha was a member of St, David's
United church, Toronto, and later
of Princess Street United church,
Kingston.
Surviving are his widow, one son
Alan Diehl, Y.M.C.A. supervisor,
overseas, and two daughters,,Mrs.
Walter Mann, Ottawa, and Mrs. A.
R. Thompson, Philadelphia.
His soh, Mr. Alan Diehl, is well
known in Clinton, having been,. the
Y. M. C. A. supervisor at the Radio
School hero for almost two years,
prior to being sent overseas.

Free Skating for School
Children
The Lions Club are as usual i spon-
soring the Saturday morning skating
for the children. Boys ten and under
from 9 to 10 a, .in. and girls (same
age) from 10 to 11 a. in., commencing
this Saturday, Jan. 8th. Country
children are extended a welcome. A
supervisor for both the girls and
boys will be at the rink every Satur-
day morning.
A hockey schedule is also being
arranged for the older boys,froin 10
to•.16 years. Here is your chance,
boys, to try your luck with stick' and
puck. -

the past two years. Mr. Agnew, had:

The new mayor is a lifelong resi-
dent of the community, except for the•
period in which he served in the•
Great War. He was with the 2nd Bat-•
talion, an Eastern Canada regiment,.
and saw service in France and with
the Army of Occupation in Germany..
Mayor -elect Agnew has the inter -
este of the armed forces at heart
and is definitely concerned with re-
habilitation and other post-war plans.
