ATKEY - - • - - Editor and- Publisher THURSDAY, SEPTEIVIBER 4, 1947 CBC's "REGIONAL COVERAGE" BC's ;appropriation of three independent sta.timis' frequencies was first declared necessary ;because of the need for greater "regional coverage". To this has now been added the 'argument that the three wave -lengths must be taken over because they will be "lost" to Canada 2f CBC faille to use them in conjunction • with 50 kw stations. It was explained to the Radio Cama by Dr. • Trigon that the three are "Class 1-A channels" — that is, no other country can use them in such a way as to cause interference at the.border above a specified degree. To remain a Class 1-A Clutmel, he saM, the power of the Station must he 50 kw. or albove. However, further questioning brought out the filet that even if the high-powered stations were not built, this country could continue to use, the three frequencies ex- actly as they are being used now. No other country could uee iiihean with a high-powered station. — i.e., as a Class VA channel. The worst that could happen is that the U.S. might operate a low -powered station on either one, which would not be strong enough to cause local inter- ference arnyvvary. All this adds up to the fact that CBC is spending more than one million dollars of the people's money for the very doubtful privilege ;of being lable to call three radio trequeuoies "Class 1-A channels". This may flatter the ego of CBC's technicians, but # is unlikely that the man •in the street really cares.
