Addressing more than 250 St. Thomas and Elgin teachers, he said it is hoped some of the re- visions will be put into effecl at the beginning of the 1950 school term. He outlined his department's plans as follows: 1—Exams: No more high school entrance examinations. 2—Grades: Reorganization or the present 13 grades into four divisions—primary, junior, _inter- mediate and senior—to eliminate the dividing line between prim- ary and secondary schools. 2—Subjects: Redistribution o7 the teaching load In the, higher divisions by transferring • certain subjects. 4—Courses: Shifting the respon- sibility for outlining the courses in elementary schools to the local or municipal level. 5—Special: Special changes in various subjects 'to Meet chang- ing needs and conditions, Mr. Porter said it was the opinion of the department that the sharp contrast between the elementary school and the sec- ondary school should be elimin- ated. The first step will be the abandonment of high school en- trance examinations. Grades 1 to 8 inclusive now are taught in the elementary schools; grades 9 to 13 in the secondary schools. .. "There will be a redistributior, of' the teaching load in the high school grades by reducing the number of subjects in Grade 9 and by transferring to Grades 11 and 12 some of the work at pres- ent assigned to Grade 13," the minister said. Reorganization of the grade; will leave the new primary div- ision roughly equivalent to pres- ent Grades 1, 2 and 3; the junior division will replace Grades 4: 5 and 6; intermediate, Grades '7, 8, 9 and 10; senior, Grades 11, 12 and 13, the last which Is taken preparatory to entering university, a NICE DONATION GODERICH — A cheque for $1,000 has been received by the board of governors of Alexandra Hospital from Mrs. W.
