Successful Bingo
Members of Hayfield Fire Bri-
gade held a very successful bingo
outside the Town Hann, on Thurs-
day evening last, to raise funds
for equipment. Ronald Christie
and The 'Shamrocks Orchestra,
Kirkton, played for the dance
which followed.
Fire Brigade Called
Bayfield Fire Brigade answered
a call to George Falconer's home
on No. 4 Highway, near Bruce -
field, on Saturday evening. Clin-
ton, Clinton Radar School and
Brucefield fire fighting brigades
were at the scene and had the
fire in the residence under con-
trol but were running short of
water. Hayfield Brigade stood
by with extra water but it was
not needed.
Lose Infant Daughter
Sympathy is extended to Mr.
and Mrs. Maynard Corrie in the
death of their infant daughter,
Carol Alma, which occurred on
Sunday in Victoria Hospital, Lon-
don. The baby had been taken
there 'last week shortly after
birth, for special treatment, in
an effort to save her life. A pri-
vate funeral service was held at
the Ball and Mutch Funeral
Home, High St., Clinton, on Mon-
day afternoon, and interment was
made in Hayfield Cemetery.

PORTER'S HILL
Community Club Meets
Porter's Hill Community Club
met on Wednesday afternoon at
the hors of Mrs. Will Cox with
a good attendance, Mrs. J. A.
Torrance presided. The meeting
opened with singing "Silver
Threads Among the Gold.” The
roll call was answered by the
colour of your wedding dress. The
secretary and treasurer's reports
were read and adopted. After
the business discussion period
the meeting was brought to a
close by repeating the Lord's
Prayer in unison.
A vocal sole and a reading
given by Mrs. Peter Harrison
were very much enjoyed' by all.
Short readings were also given
by Mrs. Alvin Betties and Mrs.
Donald Harris.
Miss Norah Cunningham, sup-
ervisor of Nursing of Huron
County Health Unit, was present
and gave a very interesting talk
in the work of the Unit. Every-
one enjoyed hearing her and we
appreciate her giving time' and
effort to be present,
A delicious lunch was served
by the hostess. The next meet-
ing will he at the home of Mrs.
P. Harrison.
LONDON ROAD
London Road Club Meets
The August meeting of London
Road Club was held at the home
of Mrs. Swinbank. The meeting
opened with the singing of "The
Maple Leaf Forever" followed
i'by the Club Creed. Mrs. Man-
aghan was in the chair.
The minutes were reed and
approved end thank you letters
were read from Mrs. W. Falcon-
er and family and Mrs. Ander-
son, Reports were given by the
treasurer and the flower conven-
er. It was decided to send a
pair of blankets to a family in
Hayfield. The September meet-
ing has been changed to the home
of Mrs. H. Plumsteel when a sale
of baking will be held.
The roll call was answered
with a current event by 11 mem-
bers and one visitor. The pro-
gramme was in charge of Mrs.
N. Manning. Readings were giv-
en by Mrs. Manning and Mrs. R.
Plumateel conducted a contest.
The mystery box was won by
Mrs. Watkins, tickets from which
netted $1.15.
The meeting closed with the
National Anthem after which the
hostesses served delicious refresh-
ments.
STANLEY
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Taylor,
Morris, Donna, Ina, and Barbara,
visited in Buffalo, end also at-
tended the Toronto Fair,
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Taylor,
Morley, Leola, and Arnold. re-
turned home after visiting in
Ottawa, Kingston, Niagara Falls
and Toronto Exhibition.
BLYTH
Move to Petrolia
Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Durward
left Monday for their new home
in Petrolia, where Mr. Durward
has bought a dairy business. Mr,
Durward has sold his residence
on King St. here to Mr. and Mrs.
Norman Walsh of Highway No, 4,
near Belgrave.
"Bank Night" Draw
At the concluding "Bank Night'
draw of a series sponsored this
summer by Blyth Board of Trade
held Saturday night, prizes were
won as follows: puppy, Mrs. W. J.
Pelts; groceries, William Henry,
Billy Henry, Elgin McNeil; bread
tickets, Mrs. J. Davis; tablecloth,
Jean McVittie; milk tickets, Mrs.
W. Honking; candy, June McNall;
cash prize, Miss Mary Milne;
merchandise, Donald Craig; soft
drinks, J. M. Craig; meat, Mrs.
Carl Longman; merchandise, Bert
Fear; watering can, Ralph Cald-
well; merchandise, Russell Mc-
Donald; table reflector, Harry
Gibbons. The prizes were donat-
ed by local merchants. At prev-
ious draws the awards had been
in cash.
S. S. Picnic Held
Blyth United Church Sunday
School held its annual picnic at
the United Church summer school
camp near Dunlop, on the Blue
Water Highway, with an attend-
ance of 115 persons. Races and
games were conducted by Miss
Alice McKenzie.
Results: races—four and under,
Jane Salter, Robbie Lawrie; five
and under, John Galbraith, rian
Marks, Sohn Lawrie; six and un-
der, Ronnie Tunney, Carole
Marks; nine and under, Kay Mor-
rison, Leone Hamilton. Supper
was served in the dining hall.

Service Discontinued
Hensen fire brigade has been
forced to discontinue service to
residents of Usborne Township on
account of the recent action of
Usborne Council in refusing to
pay operating costs of the fire-
men when answering a call. Hen -

taxpayers should pay for outside

Lawrence who leave here shortly
for Drumbo where Mr. Lawrence
has been transferred by the Bank
of Montreal, were honored at a
social gathering held in St. Paul's
Anglican Church Monday. Dur-
ing the evening a presentation
was made the couple by Sylvia
Henderson, following an address
by A. L. Case.
Mr. Lawrence has been with the
hank here for ten years and has
taken en active interest in many
community projects and organiza-
tions.
BUILDING BOOM
GODERICH—Goderich is hav-
ing a building boom as 35 per-
mits for new houses or repairs
amounting to a total of $22,760
were approved by Town Coun-
cil. Among them were applicat-
ions for new houses by J. W.
Cook, $5,000; Reg. 'Burrow's,
$2,800; Mrs, J. B. Whitely,

Mr. and Mrs. Jamie Sims and
daughter, Linda, moved Saturday
to London, where Mr. Sims has
been engaged as a teacher. He is
a graduate of the 1948-49 class of
Stratford Normal School.
Home From China
Dr. Edward C. Wilford, a Blyth
native, is back in his native pro
vine after 44 years in China,
where he helped organize hospi-
tals and a medical school that
gave many native Chinese doc-
tors their start.
War finally drove out Dr. Wil-
ford, although he had figured in
many previous conflicts, tending
long queues of wounded in the
wartorn fields, regardless of
which army they belonged to.
After graduating from the Uni-
versity of Toronto half a century
ago,' Dr. Wilford planned to go
to China, but his father, John
Wilford, a retired Blyth farmer;
insisted on his taking post -grad-
uate ,work at the University, of
' Edinburgh first, after which he
practised briefly at Fergus. The
enthusiastic young medico lett for
the East in 1905 and celebrated
his 25th birthday there.
His only furlough came during
World War I, and Dr. Wilford
spent it as a medical officer is.
