to win their first victory of
1949 Huron -Perth Baseball L
gue season when they waited u
til the last of the ninth to cap
the opening match from Luca
Irish Nine here Tuesday morn
by the close fit of 3-2.
With the count tied 2.2, B
•
Craig, the first man up, walke
Neilans flied to -left field. Bi
"Blondie" Cook rapped a high
one to centre, but the fielder mi
sed the ball end Craig made t
home plate easily to end th
match with one down. Howey
Cook kept on going and Crosse
the plate, too, but the run di
not count.
Lucan Scores Early
Colts spotted the visitors tw in the first frame whe the first man up,
singled, and romped home on
Chowen's homer to left with
two out. That's all the Irish
were able to get, although' they
had runners on third in the third,
fourth and sixth.
The locals did not reach first
until the fourth, against the fine
twirling of 17 -year-old George
Appleton of Lucan, backed by
excellent support, The first
eleven batters did not register,
including five strikeouts, but the
12th, Art Woodcock, singled for
the first Colt safe hit of the
season.
It was Clarence Nauru' hom-
er in the fifth with none out
and the one that put our Colts
in the running, but the next
three batters all flied out. In the
seventh, Neilans again came
through with a triple to Left
centre with two out and romped
home from Third on Cook's single.
The veteran Gordon Stock
pitched six frames and Bob Drap-
er for three, Manager Hugh
teawkins came in as a hit-
r for Bob Miller withrnch two out
in the seventh, but grounded out
et first. Sixteen -year-old Jack
Wilson made his debut at short-
stop, and banged out a single.
It was an excellent game of
ball for the first of the season,
and the fair crowd on hand,
despite threatening drizzles, vot-
ed it just that.
Colts are guests of Clinton
RCAF here Monday, May 30, and
play at Zurich next Thursday,
June 2. The Airmen entertain
Centralia the same evening.
