When I was a youngster, it was fun to help plant potatoes because father let us take off our shoes and stock- ings and promised to buy us fire- crackers if we kept at the job. Father reminded us continually all day, then mother scolded us all evening about dirty feet and the danger of firecrackers. ,To- day • we could sympathize with parents even though . wewere never such a problem as the modern youth! We can't tell you how to "mind the • children," but we can help you With gardening information: L Advice regarding crops, fertil- izer and care of gardens will lie available locally through government authorities. 2,11ow much you plant depends upon the amount you will use and the amount that can be stored. 3. The size of garden will limit vegetable crops that can be grown so those vegetables should be planted that have the highest nutritional value. Spinach, squash and carrots have high Vitamin A content while tomatoes, because they are a splendid source of Vita- min C, should also be grown, t. We remind you " of the early and late cabbages when you buy plants. The early ones are quite green throughout but cannot be stored and this also applies to the red, varieties. The hard white kinds are easily stored for winter use. 5. Beware of thick sowing of seeds, It wastes seed and in- creases the labor of thinning. To mark rows of slow -germin- ating seeds as carrots end beets, plant an occasion radish seed in the row. This will grow quicker and act as a marker. 6. To extend the season of such crops as beans, peas and corn, two or three sowings may be made at intervals of ten days to insure successive crops. This also applies to lettuce, carrots, beets and spinach. Hern) Elgin McKinley, .the' Progres- sive Conservative candidate for the Huron Perth riding in the oncoming election, is very much a men of the people whom he seeks to serve. He wasborn at the turn of the century, the son of Mr: and Mrs. John McKinley, Stanley Township. As a goodly number of others in both Huron and Perth, Elgin has spent his whole life on the farm where he was born. The story cf iris early life is the Story of hundreds of other farm lads throughout ;our whole country. While still quite young, he married Elsie Coleman, dau- ghter of Mr. and Mrs. George Coleman, also of Stanley Town- ship. Soon afterwards John Mc- Kinky retired to Clinton and left his son in charge of the home • place. Thus, Elgin and Elsie began the long uphill battle to become successful farm- era It was a hard battle as every farmer looking back over the past 25 years will admit. In the years together, God has bles- sed the McKinley family with seven children; of the seven, Now while the gardening is in full swing you may require a list of quick -cooking dishes, so ook over our list. In that important step Elgin McKinley proved himself a man n' of real vision. He was able to see with clearer light than most, the trend of farming in the fut- ure. To -day, the McKinley hatchery is know far and wide. Surely this is a very important point for a man seeking public office. Canada needs few things more in our day than men of vision who are able to see the future trends of industry end boldly launch out into projects that will be beneficial to the whole country, in bringing em- ployment that alone can save us from depression. If our young men are to live noble industrious lives, then we, the voter, must seek out men of such calibre for our leadership. Elgin McKinley is a deeply religious man. In a day when very few ever think of a prayer meeting, he always kept Wed- nesday night free to attend the little group that meets at Varna and Goshen. It was out of that religious conviction, came his decision to contest this election. In spite of its weaknesses, the present capitalistic democracy had given Elgin the chance to work and to win, And again, in spite of all its weakness he knew it to be . based on the Ten Com- mandments end • Tire Word !of God. J. ELGIN NIcKINLEY three fine sons and one daugh- ter are living to -day. The many friends and neigh- bours of the McKinleys will all agree that whet has contributed most to Elgin's success as a farm- er has been his chicken hatchery. Yet, if the truth is told, few thought he was wise when some years ago he started his first hatchery. At that time there was a good deal of head -shaking, Some Toss the ingredients togethe with dressing to moisten. Sery in a• chilled bowl, lined with let tuce.
