Wednesday Morning Urban schools competed in close contests Wednesday morning on the second day of the festival. Junior grades of Goderich, Clin- ton, Seaforth, and Blyth schools were commended by the adjudic- ator for their sweet singing, and told where faults could be corr- ected, J. H. Kinkead was chair- man. Highest honors and. the' Goder- ich Kinsmen club shield went to Seaforth public school in the uni- son chorus. "There is no strain in the voices here: they sang sweetly," Mr. Geen said of the Goderich kinder- garten classes. The morning class received 80 marks, and the after- noon class, '77. John Sharp, Clinton, was aw- arded 821 marks in the finals in class 65, boys' vocal solo, eight and under, "The Blacksmith." Other finalists were Billy Black- stone, 82; Paul Lee and Ross Pennington, Goderich, each 80. The record certificate worth $2.50. donated by the county of Huron, for grades 1 and 2 choir, was awarded to Central school, Goderich, with 80 marks. Clinton placed second with 78; Victoria school, Goderich, 77; Blyth, 76. Clinton public school was win- ner of the record certificate worth $5,00, donated by Cornish Electric, and presented by Mrs. Cornish to Mrs. Boyes, instructor. Thursday Afternoon 'For the second year in succes- sion, S.S, 5 Hullett was the winn- er on Thursday afternoon of the Goderich Lions Club shield with 8211 marks after competing with 21 rural schools in the two-part chorus, "Lord of Love," by Bee- thoven. S.S. 9 McKillop was a close runner-up with 82 marks. No. 1 Hullett had 81; No. 4 God- erich 801/2; No. 11 Hullett, 801/2; No. 12 Stephen, 801/2. Top winner in girls' vocal solo, 14 and under, 'Somewhere," was Shirley Bradburn, Belgrave, with 82 marks. Annabelle Taylor and Shirley Pearson, both of Grand. Bend, tied for second place with 811/2 merks. Iris Jean Byerman, Walton had 81; Iona Griffiths, Blyth, 801/2. Prizes of $2.50 each, donated by French Dry Cleaners for vocal duet class, were presented by Mrs. E. Jessop to the winners, Eunice Desjerdine and Annabelle Taylor Grand Bend, awarded 81 marks, Beth Boyd and Lois Somerville, Walton, .had 801/2; Jayne Mary Snell and Richard Snell, of Lond- esboro, 801/2; Loretta Martin and Billy McCarthy, Goderich, 80. Morning Session "The singing is of good standard and a credit to your teachers. We have been favored with quite a concert," Mr. Geen told the pup- ils of 25 rural schools on Thurs- day morning in North Street United Church, after they com- peted in the unison chorus, "One Sumner Morning Early." S. 4 Tuckersmith was declar- ed the winner with 82 marks, and was presented' by Mrs. D. D. Mooney with the Goderich Board of Trade shield. Runners-up with 81 marks were; No. 5 Colborne, No. 3 Goderich, No. 12 Stephen, No. 5 Hui/eft, and No. 9 McKillop; followed by No. 10 Colborne with 80%; No. 4 Goderich and No. 1 Hullett S.S. 4 Goderich won the rural double trio over 15 competitors with 82 marks, and was presented with th -- Mrs. Mooney.
