JOSEPH A. BEECHIE.
(By our Bayfield correspondenh)
A former well-known Landon
businessman, . oseph A.- Beeehie,
61, was found dead at Bayfield
Friday, April 29. Death was
attributed to a heart attack,
The former manager of the
Hunt Milling Corporation had
lived retired in Bayfield for the
past 12 years,
George Stevenson, working at
a house across from the Beechie
residence, heard the radio blar-
ing loudly all day. He 'saw a
•load of wood deliver l but no
e one answered the door. Finally,
Stevenson got a ladder and look-
ed through a window. He saw
Mr. Beechie's body lying on a
bed,
He called Constable Jack Park,
who summoned provincial .police
from Goderich.
Dr. F, W. Gallow, Goderieh
coroner, attributed death to
natural causes and released the
boGoderich- Provincial Constables
A. Butler and William Gardiner
invesligeted.
Mr. Beeehie's wife and two
children survive, at 89 Thornton
Avenue, London. '
Mr. Beechie retired from the
Hunt Milling firm in May, 1937,
after 32 years' service, He start-
ed with the firm at
agefue
of
17, end in 1917 was made sales
and plant manager. Under his
guidance, the business became
known from Winnipeg, to Halifax.
Following the fire which de-
stroyed the Hunt mill in 1925, Mr.
Eeechie took over complete con-
trol of the mill and"its property,
He directed the task of restoring
the plant to its former state.
The mill and employees' homes
located near -by always will re-
main a monument to his ingenuity.
When asked on his retirement
what was the greatest thrill of
his business career, Mr. Beechie
remarked: "Being able to keep
the plant busy during the depres-
sion years aed not having to lay
off any of the employees."
Requiem Mass was sung in St.
Peter's Roman Catholic Church,
Goderich, on Monday morning,
and the remains taken to London
for interment.
Pallbearers were: Charles Shan-
ahan and William Ross, Clinton;
Jack Fraser, Maynard Corrie, J.
H. Parker and George Little,

Letters to the Editor
THANKS FOR HELP
Editor,
Clinton News -Record,
DEAR SIR.
T have very much pleasure in
advising you that the 1949 Red
Cross National Appeal is progres-
sing well, with the major part
of the total alreadar subscribed
and 'additi'onal returns expected
shortly from : many localities
where campaigns were unavoid-
ably late in starting.
At this time we would like to
say once again how deeply
grateful we are - to the press of
Canada for the cooperation and
strong support they have given
the Society in this campaign and
which, without doubt, played a
major part in the success of the
appeal.
For your own personal . help
and that of your paper—MANY
THANKS.
Yours sincerely,
(Signed) C. F. JOHNSTON
