S. ATKEY, Editor A. L. COLQUHOUN, Plant Manager THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1949 The Show Ring Vers ONTARIO FARMERS have been having a field day in discussion at the annual meetings of various organizations in Toronto last week and this weak, Every year,'these two weeks in mid -winter provide them with the opportun- ity of taking time off from their daily duties, visiting the big city, and getting down to cases _ in the matter of livestock and crop production. Reports indicate that one of the big points at the livestock sessions was the fact that farm leaders received a couple of lectures on the advantages of growing animais which look good in the butcher shop rather than in the show ring. • It also is reported that some of the breeders liked what the- heard, while others dict not. The lectures, however, probably were cheerful words to farmers whose only part in• such livestock shows is the role of spectators. Most of them—and we ourselves -would ?admit the show ring has a part to play in maintain- ing breed standards and encouraging breeders to ten out animals that conform to those standards: However, when show standards call for e type of. animal that no one would buy from the corner butcher, what good is agriculture generally going to get out of it? us the Butcher Shop Professor R. G. Knox, head of the animal husbandry department at Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph, made. a point of it at the • Shorthorn meeting when he stated that show and commercial standards were getting too far apart. It came up again at a joint meet- ing of the beef breeds when Professor George Brown, MVlichigaai State College, Lansing, said he thought it was time show judges handed out points to animals that. could put on weight from foraging, rather than piling on fat when stuffed by well-heeled .bleeders. The Mme thing even came up at the Holstein -Friesian Association meeting when G. 1\4. Clemens, secretary -manager, noted that of the bullsregisteredduring the past year, 99 per cent were from dams classified as ''Good plus" or better, but only 39.per cent were from dams qualifying in ROP. He felt it was logical that bulls should ' come from herds on ROP testa Most of us like nothing'better than to see prize cettle in the show ring: But is it not possible for too much stress to be laid on that feature of livestock production and too little • on the down-to-earth production of beef for commercial purposes? 'In any case, there should be a happy medium. "Le Parti Bleu" T2IE PEOPLE OF. QUEBEC—at least some people its Quebec---seern to like the colour blue, And this isn't the blue represented in the colours of the University of Toronto nor the blue portion of the uniforms of the Toronto team, Maple Leaf hockey m It is "Ie Parti bleu," the direct descendent of the party of Sir John A. Macdonald now known as the Progressive Conservative Party. ' The Federal by-election victory in the traditionally Quebec Liberal riding of Nicolet- Yamaska o,n Monday by the Progressive Con- servative candidate probably marks a„1+.ieihing of -a •milestone in political, -Slistory of Canada, If not that, it is a • mutter off' some significance that the Progrgsgive Con.ex=vative vote should increase from 944, a peer third, in 1945, to 8.295, in fust place; 1n. THOUGHT FOR TO -DAY: Don't be fooled by the weethermon's meanderings; spring is still a few weeks distant! • , You leve to see danger to avoid it. That's why the Ontario Department of Highways says. to winter motorists: "Keep your. wits and wind, shield clear." The days are getting longer and the nights 'shorter, and pretty soon --in about six weeks' I h i beequal. Installation el a wig -Wag et the CNR level crossing on King's alighry l+tt 4c 9ouih Of Clinton, or a stop -and -go light system at the main business intersection of the two highways or both—would be a step in the right direction, However, these things cost money and' Town Council has not adopted its budget for the year, New that the Clinton Community Athletic Field •ljoard has been re -organized for 1949, may We suggest that the Board get busy at the earliest possible date, to draw up a long- range plan for Community -Park. "Hit-and- miss" tactics dill never get the project any- where, and there certainly is' much to be done to make the Park "a 'thing of beauty and a joy forever." 1vTes1 Nawm-RSD Letters to the Editor OUR THANKS, TOO!
