TOWNSHIP OF STANLEY
NOTICE is hereby given that the Municipal Council
of the Township of Stanley proposes that after the 26th
day of August, 1948, being the date of the last publication
of this Notice, to consider the passing of a by-law to close
the portion of the original road allowance known as Con-
cession 8, between East part of Lot 13 R.R.N. and West
part of 14 B.R.N., in the Township of Stanley in the County
of Huron, and to sell and Convey the soil freehold thereof
unto Mr. John Keyes. ,
Plans of survey and full description of the lands
affected may be inspected at the office of the undersigned.
The Municipal Council will at its regular meeting,
to be held in Varna on the 6th day of September, 1948,
hear in person or by his or her solicitor or agent, or person
who claims that his or her land will be affected by the
passage of the said by-law and who applied to be heard.

Lean wedding on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Armand Manness
and two sons returned to London
on Sunday after having spent a
fortnight with the former's par-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Manness,
Mr. and Mrs. R. Clark and
Roberta, Cleveland, spent the
weekend at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Chas, Berry. Mrs. Clark and
Roberta remained for a longer
visit.
Dr. and Mrs. E. P. Lewis and
Mrs N. 'W. Woods returned on
Sunday evening after a motor trip
to Tobermory, Manitoulin Island,
and home via Sudbury, North Bay
and Oriilia.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold King, Sar-
nia, spent the weekend with the
latter's mother, Mrs. Caries W.
Parker. Mrs. Parker accompanied
them on their return to Sarnia
for a visit.

Claire :Wallace Visits Canada's West Coast
Back from sunny Bermuda ---hence •the enormous hat—
radio commentator Claire Wallace is heading for Canada's
Pacific coast, where she will report the an'nua'l gladioli festival
and the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver on her nat-
ionally broadcast program "They Tell Me". Miss Wallace
will cover the gladioli festival Aug. 20. Her Aug. 23 program
will originate in Victopia and ,She will be back in Vancouver on
Aug. 25 and 27 for the Pacific National Exhibition. An
inveterate 'traveller in search of new stories, Miss Wallace
plans to visit other western cities and towns before returning
east.

Mr, and Mrs. Bob Howard and
the latter's mother, Mrs. Roth, and
Kenneth Lynn, Detroit, spent a
few days last week with the for-
mer's mother, Mrs. William How-
ard, Miss Jean Brown and Tommy
Howard, Detroit, were also with
her over the weekend. Tommy
remained for a longer visit with
his grandmother.

Chris Parker has purchased the
William Dowson farm on the Parr
Line, near Varna,
Successful Bazaar
The W.A, of St. Andrew's Unit-
ed Church held a very success-
ful bazaar and tea on Thursday
afternoon on Mrs. Malcom Toms
lawn. Tea was served cafeteria
style and there were home-made
baking, and fancy work tables
besides a grab bag.
Birthday Congratulations!
Congratulations are extended
to Mrs, Charles W. Parker, who
on Friday, August 13, passed her
eighty-ninth birthday. Mrs. Par-
ker is enjoying good health and
during the afternoon and even-
ing many friends called to wish
her "many happy returns of the
day".
To Produce Melodrama
An experiment as a Summer
Theatre group is being tried in
the rehearsal of a five -act melo- X
drama, "The Streets of New York'
It is being produced by commun-
ity effort under the direction of
Alfred McAlister, London, who
directed the winning Inter -Var-
sity Drama League play which
was awarded The London Free
Press Trophy. James R. Scott,
CBC„ Toronto is assisting in an
advisory capacity. It is planned
to stage it in the Town Hall,
Bayfield, the last week in Aug-
ust for the benefit of the Pioneer
Park Fund,

Ebenezer W.A.
The W.A, of Ebenezer Church
met at the home of Mrs. Harry
Oakes for the August meeting.
The president, Mrs. Frank Jones,
presided at the meeting, which
was opened by singing a hymn.
The roll call was "My favourite
house plant." The minutes of
the previous meeting were read
and adopted.
Following the business session
of the meeting, the Scripture
reading was given by Mrs. W.
Biggin, after which Mrs. C. Tav-
ener led in prayer. Solos were
given by Lois Jones and Edith
Jones, and Lois Jones gave a
reading. A hymn and the Bene-
diction closed the meeting.
Mrs. Biggin conducted a "game"
contest, following which delicious
refreshments were served by the
hostess,

Church Anniversary
The anniversary of Blake Unit_
ed Church is to he held next Sun-
day, August 22 at 2.30 p.m. Rev.
A, Hinton, Kippen, is to be the
guest speaker. The choir of
Zurich Evangelical Church will
assist with the music.

Limns' Frolic Success
Zurich Lions' Club held its
fourth annual frolic.
The frolic was officially opened
by W. If. Golding, M,P„ Seaforth
A dance was held, in the town hall
with Norm Carnegie's orchestra.
At 11 p.m, a display of fireworks
was staged.
Draw prize winners were as
follows: Bedroom suite, Jacob
Deidhert, Hay Township; chair,
Delbert Geiger, Hay Township;
bicycle, T. C. Haberer, Zurich;
electric blanket, Mrs. T. Rader,
Hay Township; table set, Mrs.

The gross, proceeds of $2,300 are
to be used for building a new
arena and community hall, which
the Lions hope. Will be started
this fall.

GODERICH — By-laws fixing
the dates on municipal nominat-
ions and election on last Tuesday
in November, 7.30 p,m.; and the
second Tuesday in December from
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. were passed by
Town Council.

munity met at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Bari Wightman on
Thursday evening to honor their
daughter Margaret, bride-to-be of
this month. During the evening
an address was read by Miss'
Norma Taylor extending congrat-
ulations and good wishes, and 'a
miscellaneous shower was pre-
sented to the guest of honor by
Miss lleen Taylor. The trousseau
and gifts were displayed by Miss
Munn and Miss Hattie Wightnlan,
Refreshments were served,
Presbyterian WMS
Mrs, J. C. Stoltz opened her
home for the August meeting of
the W,M,S. of Knox Presbyterian
Church. The president, Mrs, Ed-
gar Lawson, took the chair and
opened the meeting with prayer,
The scripture was read by Mrs.
Herb. Govier, who also offered
prayer. After a reading by Miss
Viola Letherland, lives of several
pioneer missionaries were review-
ed by Mrs, Lawson, Mrs, Fred
Ross, and Mrs. Wellington Good.
A duet was sung by Laura May
and June Letherland, accompan-
ied by Mrs. Houston. Mrs. Govier
offered the closing prayer, and
the hostess served lunch.
BYPU Meets
The BYPU met Sunday after-
noon in place of the regular
church service. The meeting pre-
pared by Mrs. R. J. Phillips and
Bob Wilson, was conducted by
Bob Wilson. Prayer was offered
by • George Raithby. A chorus
composed of Alan, Grant, Johnny
and Paul Raithby, sang. Read-
ings were given by Pearl Wilson,
Frank Raithby, George Raithby
Jr„ Leonard Good and Amelia
Mellwain. Solos were rendered
by Jack Ladd and Marion Taylor,
and vocal duets by Evelyn Raith-
by°and Elaine Johnston, and Mr.
and Mrs. W Vesterfelt. A Bible
quizz was riven by Bill', Rob-
e'ison, and Emma Robertso 1 read
the Scripture. The topic was
taken by George Robertsoa, and
the meeting concluded with pray-
er by ?nines Raithby, Miss Shir-
ley Robertson presided at the:,
piano during the service.
