A team representing Clinton
Won its first hockey championship
in many years when the youthful
Lions\eaptured the WOAA Bant-
am championship for 1948 by out-
scoring Southampton Fishermen
5-4 in the final round,'
The local kids won the first of
the two -game series on Owen
Sound ice Wednesday last and
then tied the northerners 2-2 on
Stratford ice Friday afternoon last
to win the trophy by one goal.
With 'Glose to a hundred Clinton
fans creating pandemonium, the
young Lions came through with a
thrilling overtime victory Friday.
At the end of regular time, South-
ampton was leading. 2-1 ,ari :'the'
game, and the round was tied 4-4.
It was decided to .play ten min-
utes', overtime: to .break the -tie
but that 'wasn't., enough to do the
trick, as neither team could score.
After a rest, the youngsters went
out to battle., it out to,a finish, it
being agreed that the, first •, goal
scored would decide the new
champions.
With about two minutes gone
in the final overtime session,
Clare Maltby weaved his way,
down through a maze of sticks
and bodies, took a shot from left
from close in. The Southampton
goalie stopped the puck but did
not smother it, and the disc re-
flected out to the right where
Jerry Holmes, Clinton centre, was
' parked for just such an occasion.
And Jerry made no mistake what-
ever.
,A Wild Scene • '
Then followed' a wild and'fasc-
inating scene. Players hugged each
other. Manager "Red" Garon and
Coach Bill Counter, and countless
supporters rushed on the ice in
one great joy -fest. It' was several
minutes before things quieted
down. It was a great : game to
win, but an awfully thigh one
to lose, as both teams tried hard
and worked themselves ,into ex-
haustion:. ,
