(By Richmond Atkey) The largest crowd of the sea -
It was a lovely day for a ball son saw Oakville pull an eighth -
game yesterdeyeafternoon, and a inning break for two• runs and
goodly number of supporters the ball game as Lions lost 2-1
motored down to Oakville to see here Saturday afternoon in the
the local youngsters Llay the sec- first game of the finals.
and game of the Ontario Midget Two visitors, who had walked,
baseball finals. were on bases with, two out and
Lions lost the match 9-3, and two' strikes on the' batter. The
the series in two straight, but not ball went high and bounced be -
without a struggle. 'The tough hind catcher -Jenkins, who pick -
luck defeat here Satufday after- ed it up end threw wild to Car -
noon perhaps took a little starch rick who rushed in to get the
out of them, but they fought hard g s
runner gore home. Result wa
all the wa. They were beaten that the first unner tallied on
by a sweet ball team, although it
it true they didn't get a "break"
all day. Oakville seemed to get
them all. .
Statistics ere cold things, but
owing to lack of space and time,
the box score and summary will
have to be the chief contribution
in reporting the game. The facts
are there to read, and they pretty
well tell the story.
Lions got off to a bad start in
the first, inning, with two walks
end three hits against them, and
never seemed to be able to get
going. The Oakville boys didn't
get on the bases in Clinton Sat-
urday, but they did at Oakville
yesterday and they ran wild. No-
body seemed to be able to get
the range. The kids did a grand
job this season.

With the first half of the
schedule completed, CDOI still
has to win a game in the Huron
Secondary Schools Association
rugby series, just the reverse of
last year at this time.
The boys journeyed to Code-
rich yesterday afternoon end lost
11-0 but are not a bit down-
hearted as they enter the second
half, •
During the first quarter, Gard-
ner tallied five points for Gode-
rich, but the touchdown was not
converted. Pinder got another
major for Goderich, with Camp-
ion converting, making the count
11-0 at quarter time.
Clinton began to bear down in
the second quarter, however, and
held the County Town lads score-
less for the rest of the match,
Goderich had planned to win
by 30 ports, but they were far
from realizing their objective.
Good Showing in WOSSA
A group of winners at the CDCI
field day competed at the WOSSA
field day in London Saturday. No
less than 15 competitors made the
trip.
The boys did very well indeed,
as the following prize winners
would indicate:
Torn Colquhoun, first in junior
high jump; Don Ladd, fourth in
junior high jump; Bab Elliott,
fourth in senior shot put; Joanne
Castle, third in softball throw.

New Gowns Add Dignity
We should like to comment on
the appearanlce of the Ichunch
choir on Sunday last, the mem-
bers of which wore for the first
time their new choir gowns re-
cently purchased, adding e new
dignity to the services of wor-
ship.
No Church Service
Worship will not be held in the
village church this Sunday as
Taylor's Corners Church is hold-
ing anniversary services at 11
a.m, and 7,30 p.m., with the
guest speaker being Rev, W. J.
Rogers. Hensall. It is expected
that many from Holmesville will
gather to hear Mr. Rogers, a for-
mer pastor of this community.

Says "Chick" Appel
• "Chick" Appel, sports editor
of The Stratford Beacon -Herald,
was one of the interested spec-
tators at Saturday afternoon's
OBA Midget final match here
with Oakville when the latter
won 2-1.
Under the heading, 'Just Tough
Luck," . "Chick" gives his re-
actions:
Baseball fans might well ask
what does a pitcher have to do
to win a game, after reading in
another column of this page that
15 -year-old Bob Carrick, hurling:
for Clinton Lions, in the first
game of the OBA midget "B"
finals, at Clinton, Saturday af-
ternoon, lost a 2-1 decision to
Oakville,' after limiting the op --
position position to one lone single.
:k N: *
Heard a lot about this young'
southpaw so Saturday afternoon:
proved an advantageous oppor•
-
tunity to yourney up to Clinton.
and see just what this youngster•
has to cause all the raves through-
out "Tory" Gregg's area, and
frankly this kid has plenty (ire..

Chip Off The Old Block
First of all it should be noted
that this mere boy, who will not
be •16 until next month, stands
five feet, ten inches and weighs
approximately 165 pounds, is the. -
son of another forkflinger by the
same name, who hurled great ball
for Stratford ' Nationals some -
years ago and could also lather
the old apple when at bat.
The kid is a dead split of the
old man in stature, walk, pitching,'
and batting, and if big league
scouts are smart in their sear
for promising future talent, they'
might be wise to give this same=
Bob Carrick of Clinton Lions
Midgets a looksee. (Are you -
listening Jack Cooke?)
X. , :Q
Young Bob is far from a finish-
ed workman, nor could you ex-
pect anything else at his tender -
years, but friends, he sold this
writer on what he displayed Sat-
urday afternoon at Clinton and,
again Jack Cooke, you probably
can get an eyeful, if you can
spare the time in your busy life,
by hopping aver to Oakville,,
Wednesday afternoon, and giving
the 15 -year-old Bob Carrick the•
onceover.
