Hydro "Chopper"
Is Handy Article
Ontario Hydro engineers have
invented a new type of "chopper,"
While it will not chop• wood, it
will do all sorts of things to
eleotrical energy, and many of
them are now being used in con-
nection with the Commission's
frequency standardization pro-
gram.
Officially known as the 500 -
watt Chopper Type Frequency
Changer, it will convert 25 cycles
to 60 and vice versa, and change
direct current to the alternating
type or the reverse. It will per-
form all these varied, technical
operations at the will of an op-
erator, who merely has to touch
a toggle switch.
Hydro Chairman Robert H.
Saunders stated that the "chop-
per" had been produced after
months of research and laboratory
tests. Now, 360 of 'them are in
use, and highly encouraging re-

stall eight sets in one day. On
the other hand, the motor genera-
tor type of frequency changer,
which, can effect only one type
of conversion, weighs 250 pounds,
and requires a crew of four to in-
stall four sets a day.
The "chopper" has proved in-
valuable in the frequency stand-
ardization program now in prog-
ress in the 25 -cycle areas of
Southern Ontario, particularly in
connection with the changeover
of domestic oil burners and re-
frigerators, Mr. Saunders said.
The development work on the
"chopper" was carried out by
Ontario Hydro's Conversion En-
gineering Department under H.
A. Smith, M. D. Berry and two
junior engineers, A. T. Patter-
son and W. H. Neame.
Commenting on the new unit,
one of the field men stated: "The
chopper in the conversion pro-
gram is Iike the jeep in World
War II; first we thought they
were no good, now we can't get
enough of them."
