Upset. Londesboro
(By G. Pratt)
The Londesboro B -A's seeking
revenge for a loss to the RCAF
softeners (their only loss of the
season) broke out on top in the
first inning when Bud Gairns,
the starting pitcher for the RCAF,
after striking out the first man
to face him, had difficulty find-
ing the plate. The B -A's, taking
advantage of several free passes
and a timely hit to push across
two runs. Murray Madsen was
rushed in to put out the fire but
before the side was retired two
more unearned runs had crossed
the plate making the score 4-0,
There was no further scoring un-
til the top of the fourth inning
when the B -A's put together a
two -base error and a towering
fly to push across another run,
making the score 5-0.
The RCAF finally broke the
goose egg when Bob Powell

Airmen Gain Revenge
From Port Albert
(By G. Pratt)
One of the best games of the
season was played on the new
softball diamond on the Station
Sports Field July 9 end saw the
RCAF nine, under the guidance
of Wallace on the mound, emerge
victorious with a score of 12-5.
Many fine fielding displays
were witnessed by the spectators
the RCAF nine coining up with
two double plays (a rarity in
softball). Fitzsimmons robbed Port
Albert of a sure home run when
he made a leaping catch of a long
drive to deep left. field.
Wallace on the hill twirled
neat five -hitter (one a home run
with nobody on base by Chis-
holm), giving up three bases on
balls and striking out six. The
hitting stars of the game were
Frank Boyczulc with two hits in
four times at bat, Joe Laudenbach,
Bill Turnbull and Wallace each
withtwo for five. and Fitzsim-
mons with a healthy three for five.

Amateur Radio Men
Have Fine "Hamfest"
(North Bay Nugget)
They came from as far off as
"Newfie", Saskatchewan a n d
Michigan. Some of them came
in RCAF "Dak" transports, some
came in nifty privately owned
aircraft, and others came by road
and rail. Some even came in
fifteen -year-old jatilopies` b tit
they came to the Northern On-
tario "hamfest" July 1st week-
end.
Clerks, millionaires, truck -
drivers and housewives . all
just plain "hams" attended the
"limiest" in North Bay, over the
holiday weekend.
F/S Alex Vellenran, RCAF Sta-
tion, was among those who at-
tended.
Biggest amateur radio event of
it's kind ever. held in the North,
the three-day program opened at
Camp Friendship on Saturday,
and ambled informally through
Sunday and Monday, with more
than 350 amateur radio operaters,
wives (xyl's) and children Ware
-
sines) taking part.
Organized jointly by the am-
ateurs of the North Bay, Sudbury
and Kirkland Lake radio clubs,
the "hamfest" included a monster
weiner roast Saturday night, a
field day, banquet anti dance Sun-
day night, and sight-seeing on
Monday.
Centre of most of the events
was Camp Friendship on Lake
Nipissing, and the Top Hat Pav-
ilion where the dance and ban-
quet was held.
Eighty of the delegates were
ferried in free by RCAF Dakota
aircraft. The aircraft .picked up
"Air Force Amateur Radio Sys-
tem" (AFARS) members, and
"airlifted" them from Montreal,
Toronto, London, Ottawa, Hamil-
ton, Halifax, Cape Breton and
Newfoundland, and flew them to
North Bay Airport, for the open-
ing of the hamfest, and returned
them to their home cities Mon-
day:

The RCAF's assistance threw
emphasis on the more serious side
of the fun -filled holiday gather-
ing. Many amateurs in the
AFARS are organized to help,
with communications in times of
disaster, emergency or war.
Thanks to the volunteer work
of the amateur broadcasters, many
Canadian cities are already equip-
ped with emergency communica-
tions systems for use in emerg-
encies. North Bay is one of these
cities.
As an example of this pre-
paredness, about 40 privately -
owned cars equipped with two-
way radio turned up for the
weekend affair, and were guided
to the site by the North Bay
Club Station, VE3DLE, which
was situated at Camp Friendship
for the occasion. Some of the
delegates who attended, and came
by radio equipped cars were
"Wib” Clements of Hamilton,
"Alex" Velleman of Clinton,
"Jim" Mussleman of Sudbury, and
many others,
To strangers in the vicinity,
the "hams" seemed to be talking
strange language. Their ha in
jargon was injected into every
sentence, and even the parasitics
(children) talked of 870's (drinks)
and QSO's (Conversations).
Dozens of prizeswere awarded
during the various events, and the
special prize of the affair was a
Communications receiver, which
was won by a North Bay amateur,
Lou Zupo.
"Fish -Fry" Proves
Very Enjoyable
(By LAC A. L. Gunn)
A fishing trip was held on
Saturday, July 7, ;by RCAF Fist's
and Game Club, but as this was
organized at very short notice,
only six members were present.
A few bass were caught at Ben -
miller. Fails and then a few more
further downstream, but on the
whole, the fishing was not too
good. Perhaps it was a bad day
for spinners; on the other hand
it could have been a bad day
for fish.
The best part of the day was
when the fish were fried and
devoured et a "fish -fry", held to-
ward the end of the evening. This
seems to be about the best way
to enjoy fresh -caught fish and
all those present agreed that it
was worth the trouble, Every-
body had a good day and it was
generally decided that there
should be more of them,
We are sorry about the lack of
publicity for this particular trip
but I hope to remedy that in the
future. I am arranging to post
notices for forthcoming activities
on the notice boards in Building
22 and In the Dining Room. With
these notices and those published
in the DRO's.we should all know
what is going on, so watch out
for them, Keep in touch with
me in the Drawing Office and
bring in any suggestions y o u
have, we' need them ell if we
are to keep our club on the ac-
tive list.
