HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1951-05-10, Page 10PAGE TEN CLINTON NEWS -RECORD THURSDAY, MAY 10, 1951 Colts Present $200 To Lions for Sports With Manager Bert Gliddon officiating, the executive of Clin- ton Colts Hockey Club formally presented a cheque for $200 to Clinton Lions Club at a sports dinner meeting of the Lions Club in St, Paul's Parish Hall Tuesday evening. • In making The presentation, which came at the close of the meeting when members of—the Colts, players and executive, were guests of the Lions, Manager Gliddon paid tribute to the work done by the Lions Club in past years in developing hockey and other sports in Clinton, Most of the 1951 Colts, Mr. Glidden said, had learned their hockey while playing under Lions colours. He referred to the Lions Ontario juvenile ehanr-- ionship team of 1940, many of whose members have been Colt players. Manager Gliiddon said the wish of the Colts was that the money be used for whatever purpose deemed best, whether it was for minor sport or for reducing the $4,000 indebtedness standing ng a- gainst Clinton Lions Arena. President Hugh R. Hawkins ex- tended a hearty welcome to the Colts and executive and also to several IIEPC conversion offic- ials present: G. E. Whitaker, area project manager; Grant Webber, public relations officer for con- version programme; Rodney Street, projectionist, C. W. Coiclough PHONE 213 CLINTON Clinton Revolver Club Wins Again Listowel Pistol Club paid a return visit to Clinton Revolver Club on Friday evening last when a match was held et the Epps Sports Shop Pistol Range, Clin- ton. The home team, led by Ell- wood llwood Epps, came out victorious with a score of 461 out of a pos- sible 500. P. Thompson, Cliff Saunderelock, E. Rivett, Bob Morgan end Ken Carter came up with good scores. For Listowel Dr. Kirk led the Club with a score of 459. R.. Oke, D. Farrish and B. E. Rowland followed. Scores included: Clinton — E. Two baseball teams will be operated by the Lions Club This year --Juvenile, with R. E. Hol- mes manager, and Bantam, with manager and coach still needed and volunteers requested. R. G. Bennett introduced Grant Webber, who spoke at length on the frequency standerdiaation programme of HEPC and showed coloured movies. He was thanked in behalf of the group by Frank Fingland, KC. K. W. Colquhoun expressed the thanks of the Colts to the Lions Club. Kelso Streets, Colt execu- tive, won the draw. Local Girl Wins Honour Queen of Ball Mils Catherine ("Kit") Ping - land, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Prngland, Clinton, re- ceived the high honour of being crowned "Queen of the Ball" at London Normal School Friday evening last. Here's how The London Free Press tells about it: Not every girl is crowned a queen. And not every queen manages to be brunette, blue- eyed—and 21. For a young teacher -to -be, Kit Fingland; Clinton, (these came true (last night as students of the London Normal School crowned her Queen of the Ball. Six Finalists An initial roster of 12 students had competed for the title, and Kit had placed among six fin'al- istls . Even Kit didn't know about her approaching "royalty" until just before the trumpets began to announce :etre corona- tion Then she could only gasp and say "What do I do now." Accompanied by her escort, Harry Knapper, Windsor, also a student at the school, she ascend- ed the stairs to the purple -draped throne erected by her subjects on the landing of the central stair- way. Here she received the sym- bol of ter royalty from Bob Mc- Intosh, Windsor, president of student government, as 400 stu- dents and friends attending the "Normal Nocturne," bowed in homage. Leader in Sports She is a leader in sports at the school, anti a star of the basket- ball team, Among gifts bestowed upon 'her by London merchants were a studio, portrait, a permanent, a cook book, a bouquet of roses, a perfume kit and a collection of theatre passes. Official duties crowded close upon Kit's coronation, as she was called upon to present .a gift of perfume to the student who had named the dance, Theresa Oulette, Windsor. Runners-up for the title were Joanne Bain, Thamesville; Jeanne Clark, Windsor; Agnes Mellon, London; Velma Smith, Guelph, and Pat Williams, Londbn, Catherine attended Clinton District Collegiate Institute and graduated from Alma College, St. Thomas, in 1950.
