A vote is to be taTen on whether the village will join Huron ar Lambton on May 16. Only Canadian property owners will be allowed to vete. Voters are expected from Loi'donStrat- ford and other points through- out Wlestern Ontario. Wording of. Ballot • Polling hours will be 9 am. to 6 pm. (EST), or 10 a.ni. to 7 p.m. (DST). Wording of the ballot will be "When Grand Bend is erected to incorporated village status, would you favor becoming pert of the county of: (A) Huron; (B) Lamb - toe.? Huron's Campaign In his letter, Warden Nicholson points out to citizens who have been considering union. with Lambton on account of .(1) the sale of liquor; . (2) taxes appear to be lower in Lambton in some eases, that "on the surface these seem to be good reasons mid the persons recommending the Lamb - ton connection 'cannot be criticiz- ed. However, a study of the sit- uation indicates that a little temporary 'advantage might be secured by a few and many per- manent important advantages would be lost to all." C.T.A. Effect "Reliable authorities at Toronto advised that conditions respecting the sale of liquor will be no dif- ferent, whatever county the vil- lage may become a part of, be- cause the Canada Temperance Art is a Dominion statute and municipal boundaries are con- troliled by the province, This view is supported in the oases of (1) New Brunswick; King ye. Mc- Mui'Lan, (2) Nova Scotia; ex pante Nagle. In support of his invitation the warden paints out that "the low- er priced properties in Grand Bend on both sides of the.county boundary have similar .tax bills at present. It is true that scene of the, more expensive properties are assessed higher relatively in Huron than Lampton and pay higher taxes, but any advantages these properties may receive in Lambton wild be only temporary. New Assessor. "Assessments for taxation are subject to revision until they are correct and no doubt some prop- erties in Grand Bend have bean assessed too high. In the future the assessing of the village will be done by the assessor appoint- ed by the ;village council and when the village is reassessed and, equalized more direct control can be exercised. "There is a growing feeling in Huron that summer cottages and other properties associated ,with ;the holiday business 'should be assessed specially, as owners do 'not use the schools and use other facilities provided by the public for only a few months each year, Twenty-six counties have county assessors, Lambton is one of the +12 that has not yet adopted the system. I•t is likely that the alp pointment of a county assessor will become compulsory so that theeffect that it had in Huron will then apply to Lambton. Street Work "During the past few years Huron paid for work on urban streets to the value of 25 per cent of the road levy of the municipality. No other county treated their urban municipalities so well. "If Grand Bend becomes a pert of Lambton, all of the business associated' with the courts, the registry office, the county council and much law business will have to be transacted at Sarnia which Attention arnaers r r We have in stock: Cultivators, Drills and Discs Be sure to see these before you buy W. Alberta Oil Enters Ontario Refinery Before turning the valve which started Alberta oil flowing into tankage at Sarnia refinery, Premier Leslie M. Frost boarded the Imperial Leduc, largest lake tanker in the world, and con- gratulated her master, Capt. T. K. R. Knight, of Sarnia, on his new command. The ship was built to carry Alberta oil from the terminal of the Interprovincial Pipe Line across the Great Lakes to Ontario andpicked up her first cargo as soon as navigation opened on the upper lakes. The arrival of. Alberta oil in Ontario, the Premier said, makes Canada more self-sufficient and marks the beginning of a new phase in the progress of our country. Oil from the Sarnia area once moved west into the prairies but now Alberta oil moves east to serve the homes and industries of Ontario, Premier Leslie M. Frost of Ontario said at a cere- mony marking the first delivery of Alberta crude oil via pipe line and tanker to Sarnia. Stating the event was a milestone in Canadian economic history, the Premier said it meant a bigger market for the west and would make Canada more self-auffieient in oil supplies. Here, as refinery employee Wm. Taylor watches, Premier Frost turns a valve to start the first oil flow from the Imperial Leduc, world's largest lake tanker, into shore tankage. is nearly 20 miles further then Goderioh. Df in Huron, there would be a strong argument for admission. Little Debt "The County of Huron is a progresive county. It has no debenture debt except for a new court house, and while most of this money has been raised and the debentures retired ihIs year, the money has not yet been spent. These debentures bear interest at the rate of 1% per cent which shows the high credit rating of Huron. This county has about $200,000 of other surplus funds. "It has the health and 'sanita- tion unit recommended and sub- sidized by the Department of Health in operation and its citi- zens are deriving its advantages. "It has 120 miles of paved county roads. It was to give ser- vice to Grand Bend that the Crediton road was paved by this county many years before addac- ent provincial highways. It ban a new registry office that has been paid for from 1949 and 1950 taxes. The county home has management that is second to none end is an institution in which we take great pride. Lower , Taxes "While Huron has been giving these services to Its citizens, its tax rate is similar to that of Lambton. Taxes will probably be lower in Huron than in Lambton in the future because the one mill court house debenture pay- ments will end this year, the registry office payments com- pleted, and Lambton will prob- ably raise their taxes 'to provide services already enjoyed in Huron. "No effort was made by this county to retain Grand Bend in Huron so long as it appeared that the proposed municipality might gain by being in Lambton, but since a study of the situation dhows that the reverse is the case, it is the hope of Huron that the residents of Grand Bend will de- cide to remain in Huron where the village belongs, geographic- ally." 0 Oh No!
