FOR SOFTBALL
AND BASEBALL
Sportsmen from all sections of
Western Ontario convened at
Wingllaan for the spring meeting
of Western Ontario Athletic As-
sociation and laid plans for the
softball and baseball season.
M. L. "Tory" Gregg was in
charge of the meeting attended
by over 100 sportsmen from For-
est in the south to Markdale in
the north. The WOAA again will
sponsor all softball series "A",
"B", "C", Juvenile, Midget, Ban-
tam and. Pee Wee, and Ladies'
Intermediate, Junior end Juven-
ile series.
The meeting decided to adopt
a similar series in the baseball
classified as "A" for 3,000 and
over; "B" for 1,000 to 3,00(1; and
"C" for under 1,000 population.
The WOAA unanimously decid-
ed to hold a softball umpires'
school at Port Elgin, Clifford and
Forest. A similar baseball school
for umpires has been named for
Markdale and Listowel, if ar-
rangements can be made and um-
pires engaged to conduct the
schools.
A decision to set up a fastball
league, comprised of all the "A"
teams, was shelved until the
group meeting when a fastball
umpire will be secured to discuss
the some.
Deadline for entries for base-
ball and Softball Was set for May

for May 15 and the softball for

PLOWMEN GROUP
COMPLETES 25
YEARS' SERVICE
(Continued from Page One)
the county and nearly all of the
townships. The North Huron
plowing match Was held annually
before the provincial match.
Since the beginning, the As-
sociation has helped to advertise
Huron County, for What it
the best farming district in On-
tario, said Mr. Cardiff.
In his 25 years' association with
the plowmen, Mr. Cardiff has
missed only one annual meeting.
J. A. Carroll Speaks
J. A. Carroll, Toronto, secre-
tary -manager, Ontario Plowmen's
Association, congratulated the
association and especially Mr.
Cardiff.
Mr. Carroll sketched the growth
of the Ontario organization since
the first plowing match in 1913.
Canada is "Best"
V. E. Porteous, Owen Sound', a
past president of the Ontario As-
sociation, who accompanied the
overseas trip winners to Ireland
last fall, gave an interesting ac-
count of his experiences while
on the continent and the British
Isles.
"Looking over it ail, as far as
agriculture was concerned," said
Mr. Porteous, "Canada is the best
place in the world." He was im-
pressed in Engand by the fact
that farmers do not appreciate
labor costs. They produce twice
as much per acre that we pro-
duce, but have twice the man-
power to do it.
Ott the continent, T.B. testing
of cattle has been done to quite
an extent, but in the British
Isles, very little has been done.
"We, here, in Canada, are so
far advancd in T.B. testing com-
pared to England, where there
is no compensation offered for
cattle that go down. In Canada
animals which do not pass the
test, have to be slaughtered
whereas in England, the farmer
can take the animal and sell it,"
said Mr. Porteous. He mentioned
the wonderful tour the group took
in Edinburgh, visiting the Edin-
burgh Castle which was a former
old monastry built in 1800, and
the Scotch Government buildings
where judges, lawyers, etc., still
wear wigs.
The highlight of the tour °en-
tered at the International Plow-
ing Match held in Northern Ire-
land, where the first "Festival of
Britain Cup" was awarded to a
Canadian, Hugh Leslie.
