'Should R and. C .S Adopt A Mascot?
MASCOT: (npun) , A person or thing that is supposed
to bring good luck; as: •"The tesan's mascot is a 'bulldog."
COMING ON TOP of the announcement that Sgt. Minto, a
•.200 -pound grizzly bear cub, has -just been adopted by No, 420
Tighter Bonsber Squadron, Winnipeg, as a mascot —because the
squadron flew the insignia of the grizzly bear dueing the Last
war—are some thoughts on what might be an Acceptable person
or thing to bring good ]Wok to R and CS, Clinton.
Some steps have been taken in this direction bid to date
neither have been accepted nor borne fruit, Last spring, the M.E.
people acquired is baby skunk, which, after (deodorizing and a
hot bath, became the leading contender for the affections of the
-entire station. Apparently •the call of the wild was too much. or
-was valued more highly by this ".former pungent one': than all
the, caresses received during normal working hours, for he (she,
'it?) deserted us. Then along came Harrison, a character associated
with F/S G. B. Kennedy. But he has proven somewhat eloof,
never pausing long enough in one place, making an investiture
as mascot out of the question.
Our enterprise with auimels not being • successful, we could
-make some endieavour in the direction of homo sapiens. For in-
stance, Marconi, if be were alive (or even the way he is) might
'be persuaded to accept the job. The experiunenters hi our labs
are in need of some of the good luck which attended his efforts,
They might even dub him Cpl. Marconi and chain him with a
gold-filled chain to the flag steff. Perhaps the services of WO1
Jones, that asbestos -clad figure. might be obtained on his retire-
ment—at half rates of pay of course. Here would be a real
good -luck talisman --a kindly, genial old ex -Sergeant-Major put-
tering about the grounds, ever ready to drop a gentle word of
encouragement or advice in return for a handshake or a plug of
tobacco. Surely this would be the royal road to immortality in
the Telecommunications branch!
ARDS might like to get into this act with us or go alonlg.
en their own. If .they decide to take it alone, the suggestion
-that they present the Station with e fountain surmounted by a
-stone figure of a graduate RO, has some merit. Aspiring cadets
could throw nickels into its waters on nights of a full moon
'hereby ensuring success end giving Clinton some of the flavorful
tradition 'of Annapolis!!
Or maybe we'd better stick to "The Thing" which, after all,
is mentioned in the definition.

Park Couneil Deals
With Many Matters
The third meeting of the year
of the Adastral Park Council
was held in the office of P/0
Carpenter, Mayor, Wednesday
afternoon, March 14, WO2 F.
MacKellar, Mrs. C. A. Mason and
F/S L. Mitchell were present.
Dogs and Garbage
The first item brought to the
Council's attention secs the sub-
ject of dogs and garbage. It was
decided .that owners of dogs
would be asked either to confine
or tie dogs on the days of gar-
bage collection, It also was sug-
gested that a system of tagging
dogs be instituted in order that
offending owners could be ascer-
tained.
Milk Boxes
A sample milk box was dis-
played by the Mayor for instal-
lation in the Parker area and
for those houses in the Ritchie
area not presently equipped with
milk boxes. It was emphasized
that the CE Section would not be
able to undertake the construc-
tion of these boxes for some time
due to pressure of other work,
and that it may be several weeks
before anything in this direction
could he produced.
The sample box is capable of
holding three quarts and is
equipped with hooks for hanging
on stair railings at the door of
the house.
Telephones
F The Mayor reported that F/L
Baxter, who has jurisdiction over
Station phones, had been negot-
iating with the Bell Telephone
Co. for the installation of a sec-
ond pay telephone in the Parker
end of the project.
Pre -School Clinic
The Mayor reported that the
School Committee headed by
W/C B. G. Miller had done some
preliminary work in establishing
a pre-school child clinic and that
machinery: was under way to
bring this clinic into. being. Im-
munizetion• and cursory examina-
tion of school children also would
be taken into consideration when
the clinic was set up.
Vegetable Gardens
WO MaeXellar reported that
investigation had been made in-
to the Starting of vegetable gar-
dens and that the area on the
south side of the Station, be-
tween Adastral Pack. and Build-
ing 55 would be available this
year.
It was decided to set up a
Garden Committee of two vol-
uited'r residents of Adastral
Park who would report to WO
1VGacl(eilar, their main job be-•
ing to have the area plowed and
conditioned .as soon as possible.
To defray the expense of this
operation, it was estimated by l L. Mitchell,
WO MacKellar that approximat-
ely $25 would be necessary and
that probably a charge of $1. per
plot would be made from those
desiring vegetable gardens.
The Mayor pointed out that
flowers are permitted around the
house lobs of Adastral Paris pro-
vided they appear es a border
around the house or along the
walks,
Traffic Signs
The Mayor read a letter to A,
Nicholson, Reeve of Tuckersmith
Township, in which traffic signs
were requested on the county
roads south and east of the hous-
ing project. He also informed
Council that approximately $200
would be spent in the near future
for traffic signs for the entire
,-station area including Adastral
Park. There were mixed opin-
ions when it was suggested that
parents also try as much as pos-
sible to keep small children off
the roads.
All items covered by the
Council and affecting residents
would, stated F/0 Carpenter, be
published shortly in PMQ bul-
letin form for permanent reten-
tion in each home.
W/0 MacKellar was unanim-
ously elected by Council. as De-
puty Mayor in the event of the
absence of P/0 Carpenter. The
meeting adjourned at 4.80 p.m.
