A Wornan's Viewpoint on This and That
By MBA
THE first half of this century
is drawing swiftly to a close
When this half century opened,'
the future looked bright and rosy
. . . Many decades of the "Pax
Britannica" had been enjoyed by
the nations of the world . . Dur-
ing the nineteenth century there
had been a gradual, but definite
move to bring about •the eman-
cipation of the masses of human-
ity, which had been in varying
degrees of bondage during the
centuries . . The industrial re-
volution had brought to the peo-
ples necessities and comforts
never before thought of Man-
kind looked forward to the new
cerithry hopefully and cheerfully-
TIIERE has been no such cheera
ful outlook for the new half
century . , Having spent a
quarter of the past fifty years in
armed conflict, the world today
has only the prospect of being
at war or in a state of war, as
far in the future as man can
foresee . .

THERE have been wars and
dictators with world ambitions
before this in history, but never
before have there been two such
colossi facing each other - not
only in physical might, but in
the clash of their varying ideal -

filet between this hemisphere and
its outposts and the rest of the
world, that will continue tar
generations, and will bring about
a degradation of nuankind never
before thought of . No one
can win ,a war today . • •
THE "sins of the fathers, etc."
are coming home to moat to-
day . . The exploitation of the
eastern races by the western
world it bearing the fruit ft de-
serves , • . The Comanunist seed
has very fertile ground in which
to be sown .. . When the democ-
racies opened up the •east to trade,
did they *take their "four free-
doms" policy with them for the
xi -Anions in the east? . . No . . .
Aided by Russia, they are having
their revenge today • • •

AFTER such gloomy editorial-
izing, let us turn to something
more cheerful and more in the
spirit of our good Canadian
Christmas season •- . That is,
the Hospital Aid Christmas Ball
• . . For several years now, it
has been the highlight of the
social side of this happy season
. . . The Collegiate Auditorium,
effectively decoreted by the Col-
legiate students, in a "winter
wonderland schime, with silver
stars and lighted Christmas trees,
made an attractive setting for the
many colorful gowns of the ladies
present . . . Receiving the many
guests were Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Fingland, the latter in blue crepe
with silver sequin trim arid Rev.
'D. J. and Mrs. Lane, the latter
in black crepe . . . Miss Luella
Walkinshaw and Mrs. L. Mc-
Kinnon were at the door . .

DELICIOUS refreshments were
served in the gymnasium by the
social committee, headed by Mrs.
Art Knight . .. The serving tables
were colorful with red carnations
and lighted red candles . . . Mrs.
W. T. Herman and Mrs. Venner
poured coffee, while assistants
were Mrs. R. M. P. Bulteel, Mrs.
George Knights, Miss M, Pickett,
