When "4Darkness, at Noon" Struck Western Ontario Sunday
Clinton's busines section had an appearance similar to
the above phptograph which clearly shows Stratford's ex-
perience Sunday with "Darkness at Noon," caused, the Do-
minion Weather Bureau reported, by winds bringing clouds
laden with smoke from forest fires in Northern Alberta.
' Taken facing west on Ontario Si., Stratford, at 1.30 p.m.
(EST) Sunday, the photograph shows the street lighted as
if it were nine o'clock in the evening. • Over the Perth
County court house at the extreme background may be
seen a glimmer -of light under the low -hanging dark Clouds.
Normal exposure under daylight conditions would be 11200th
of a second at P11. '

A Woman's Viewpoint on This and That
By MBA
WE wish this week were fin-
ished and done with . . Satur-
day night cannot come too soon
The reason, we axe confus-
ed and I guess there are many
like us in town . What with
day being turned into night and
the time of day, every day being'
at variance with radio time, it's
too much for our non -mathe-
matically inclined mind . . .
* S S
THE apex of this double time
locally is the fact that the town
is on daylight saving and the
Radio School on standard time
We feel for the many wives
of the school personnel end
civilian workers, who have child-
ren going to school on daylight
saving and having their meals
accordingly, while the breadwin-
ner of the family requires his
meals an hour later . We
know we were rather confused
theother evening we were at a
meeting attended by both ladies
living in town and at the
"school" . The town ladies
arrived on Daylight Saving and
the others on Standard time ..
The hostess, forgetting the dif-
ferent times served lunch by
Daylight Saving standards. so at
least the ladies from the Station
did not loose any sleep that
evening .

THERE is a very beautiful
collie dog living up our way,
who is a great playmate for many
of the children in the neighbour-
hood . But he has one at-
tribute even greater than the
aforementioned . One day
we noticed that a tiny tot—not
more than three years old, if
that, proceeded to cross the high-
Iway . The dog, bounded out
onto the road, stood in front of
the child, and with his nose
'pushed the child back onto the
boulevard . . . That child really
has a "guardian angel" . . .

AMONG the many stories of
people's reactions to the "black
Sunday," here is the best we
heard . . . It concernsan elderly
spinster lady, who lives not far
from Clinton :': She was cer-'
talo that the end of the world
' was coming , However, she
visited her neighbours and as
they had been listening to their
radio, they were able to give
her the cause of the remarkable
phenorhenon . She was thank-
ful to receive the news—because,
she said, she planned to take a
bath Sunday afternoon and if
the end of the world was coming,
she wanted to be sure to have
her clothes on , .

Make Your Budgeting
A Family Affair
"Many of our customers have
found that a joint account is the
most satisfactory way of dealing
with their family bills and ex-
penses," says Mr. William' Rob-
inson, manager of the Bank of
Montreal branch at Clinton.
It's as simple to open as any
other current account, and ar-
rangements are quickly made
for 'either husband or wife to be
able to sign the cheques. Many
women find such an account e
great convenience, for it helps
them to keep a much closer check
on their part'of the family bud-
get. And, if their husband's out
of town often, it does away with
the need to keep Important sums
of money in their purses or about
the house.
If you think that a joint ac-
count would make your family
financing easier, drop into the
B of M. You'll find a helpful,
efficient staff, eager to save you
time and budgeting headaches.
