We did have a grand holiday, eedause as you know, the rail- ' ways started functioning again, although too late for the CWNA convention"; which was scheduled for St,. Andrews, N.B., but was postponed until October at Que- bec City, and which we will not be attending : , . However, we did have a previewof the con- vention setting, for after several stop -overs, we spent three pleas- ant days at Quebec , OUR first stop was at Toronto to attend "Piress D!ay' at the Exhibition . , , Along with sev- eral hundred women of the press and radio, we were present at the ladies' luncheon, presided over in a charming informal manner by Mrs. Kate Aiken . . At the press building, it was like a miniature convention, with, members of the weekly press from all parts of the country dropping in at various times . . a t m TAKING the CNR night train to Ottawa- we spent a happy Lab- or Day weekend, there with some former Barrie friends, who are now residents in the Capital city . And, they, along with L, E. Cardiff, saw to it that we did not miss anything, of interest This included attendance at the Ottawa -Hamilton football game—which was really some- thing for someone who has seen nothing above the intercollegiate class of rugby . As guests of Elston Cardiff, MP for North Huron, we were present for sev- eral hours at the Labor Day ses- sion of parliament and had lunch in the Members' dining room The latter is a beautifully -ap- pointed room with large win- dows, from which you obtain a magnificent view of the Ottawa River and the Gatineau Hills • FOR GREATER SAFETY!• • FOR GREATER CONVENIENCE! • FOR GREATER VALUE! In order to catch our train we mis- sed hearing the , Hon. Lester Pearson, who, from the account we read in Hansard, made one of his finest speeches . . , * a a WE continued on to Montreal for a day and a half Here we rested mostly , . , One amus- ing incident Was when we went to a sea -food restaurant for a broiled lobster dinner . Be- fore bringing us the lobster, the Waiter appeared with large white coverall aprons, which he tied, around our necks . , It all seemed sort of silly to us, until we started into the lobster and then we understood why — they are rather difficult to eat , TRAVELLING CPR to Quebec, we experienced . one of the fastest and smoothest train rides we ever had — 180 miles in four hours, and when you consider one half hour was spent getting out of suburban Montreal and there was a ten- minute stop at Three Rivers, the train really travelled in the open country . .* a a QUEBEC City, with its quaint old world charm in Lower Town and in the neighbourhood of the Citadel, and the CPR's luxury hotel,' the Chateau Frontenac — attracts more United States tour- ists than any other single place in Canada , . , The city was simply swarming with them . We took a conducted bus tour around the Island of Orleans, where French-Canadian rural life is seen at its best, and in a full bus load, there were two from Montreal, and ourselves from Canada There were a couple from South Africa and a woman from Czecho-Slovakia and the others, all Americans, from about ten different states , , .e KO WE did a lot of wandering. around on.foot through the `Garin quarters and Laval. University area and, in Lower Town where some of the streets are so nar- row, we would not even call them lanes in this part of the country end if sidewalks exist. they are so narrow, you travel in single file , . . Many of the buildings are several hundred years old—and Many in sur- prisingly good condition . , , a * a AND during our three-day visit, We were entertained most pleasantly by the CPR public relations representative in Que- bec, Lt. -Col, Jean Marchand, and his very charming wife, at din- ner at the Garrison Club, a pri- vate club, which is housed in a large and attractive old stone building .r. . WE read numerous French language newspapers both in Montreal and Quebec and even attended the Cinema de Paris in Quebec where we saw two films made in France , . , We found that reading the newspap- ers was not so bad and in short order we were reading almost as rapidly as in English, but with the spoken French, it was much more difficult and it took some time to attune our ears to get even a smattering of what was being said in order to follow the plot of the story . . . However, we never did have too much experience in spoken French—so needless to say the only times we uttered a French word was to ask the simplest. directions , , C---" P .641 14 TRADE MARK REG. belongs in .your ice box MONSTER BINGO Clinton Lions Arena Monday, September 18 Sponsored by Clinton Lions Club $500.00 in Prizes $200.00 in Special Prizes 4 Special Games of $25.00, $35.00, $50.00, $100.00 16 Regular Games $1-25c for each of 4 Spedial Games Regular Prizes Include: 5 Turkeys 3 Motor Rugs 3 Clothes Baskets. While the troop is currently well supplied with leaders, the deplorable lack of local adult interest is a cause for real con- cern. , on -cern., The Scout Troop cannot hope to foster any feeling of continuity if it continues to de- pend on transient leadership.
