DON FAIRBAIRN
BORN ON FARM.
STILL FARMER
(Continued from Page One)
don't worry about the Kings
English — just say it,"
Then in 1939, less than six
weeks after CBC had set up its
farm broadcast service, Don join-
ed the program as commentator
and made a lot of the listener
friends who follow him now on
Neighborly News. In fact, al-
though nine years have passed
since Don did farm broadcasts,
many people still remember back
and remind him of his days as
a CBC farmcaster.
He joined the RCAF in 19,42,
was trained as a radar technician
at Clinton and served in Canada
and England before being trans-
ferred to the public relations
branch of the Air Force as a
radio correspondent.
From D -Day onwards, he fol-
lowed the Allied troops through
France, Belgium and 'into Ger-
many. During this period he
was mainly engaged in recording
descriptions of the part played
by Canadian airmen, for broadcast
to their families back home. His
work won him a British Empire
Medal which was awarded in
June, 1945.
After 'VE -Day, he became an
official war correspondent and,
during the summer and fall of
1945, travelled through Europe
with a CBC recording unit.
Shortly after his return to Can-
ada, a, major development occur-
red in the Fairbairn career—Don
got married and moved to his
present home, at Islington, just
outside Toronto, which he de-
scribes as "mostly weeds, a few
fruit trees, some strawberries and
more hay fever." He and his
wife now have a daughter.
U.n's first assignment on his
return to CBC Toronto, was the
production of CBC rebabii ca lion
shows—The Veterans' Show, This
Hungry World, The Johnny Home
Show and others. As there series
ran out, Don was assigned to
oro mom. ;o auo—stues2ord ratio
Neighborly News.
In the early part of 1947, when
Andy Clarke was ill, Don did
the Neighborly News broadcasts
for the "Mayor of the Little
Places." Since Andy's death in
May 1948, Don has continued the
program. He left the CEO staff
nearly three years ago, but knot
on with Neighborly News as a
free-lancer. He is heard on many
OBC actuality broadcasts .re-
porting on -the -spot news and
providing running commentaries
on regattas and other sports
events. He is a regular net-
work contributor to Saturday
Magazine on the CBC Trans-
Canada network.
In 1949 Don revived a custom
established by Andy Clarke—the
custom of taking "Neighborly
News" broadcasts on out-of-town
visits and has since become a
familiar figure, as well as voice,
in many Ontario towns. Clinton
will be one of the fortunate ones
on Sunday morning, August 6.
