COUNTY LIBRARY'
SYSTEM PRAISED
BY MINISTER
(Continued from Page One)
variety of literature, telling of
different phases of human en-
deavor, whatever your interest
may be, there is something in
literature to tell of it 'Reading
may be a passtime, but it may
also be useful. Books are writ-
ten on subjects wanted by read-
ing public. In this way people
may read current events, world'
movements.
If one reads only about sub-
jects that interest or appeal, soon
the desire for reading slackens.
It is necessary to read something
harder. When people . progress,
it is because they do something
harder than they had done before.
When education appears easy,
it is not education. One has to
move on to the next problem,
not stay at the same level• of
knowledge. That is the principle
behind the changes in the cur-
riculum for Ontario. It will make
it easier for the bright child to
advance to new problems as soon
as he, is ready for them. If he
has to repeat knowledge already
gained, he may deteriorate. If
he goes on at his own'speed he
will more readily develop his
talents. The time of leaving
school is when education begins.
Education should never come to
an end. Schools prepare individ-
uals to meet emergencies, by de-
veloping resources within, a dis-
cipline of body and mind.
Mr. Porter urged everyone to
read a variety of topics, to de-
velop a natural curiosity about
many subjects.
Ih discussing the literature of
the past, Mr, Porter answered
the question, "What makes this
literature difficult ,for us." It
was written long ago, for a people
of another age, in their language,
using their idioms and topical
subjects. There is something in
Shakespearian writing that still
makes it appeal, even though he
wrote for such . a different aud-
ience. He wrote of things he
saw in the local idiom, but he
also wrote with imagination and
vision.
In closing, Mr. Porter again
advised everyone to enlarge the
scope 'bf their reading. Educa-
tion does not stop when pupils
leave school. It is only just be-
ginning.

sion, W. T. Cruickshank, Wing -
