Friends of John Cairns are sorry to know, he is confined to the Scott Memorial Hospital, Seaforth. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Knox, Sarnia,- spent a few days at the home of Mr. and Mgrs. Lorne Wilson, Mrs, David Tough spent the weekend at her home, returning to Delhi' to spend the winter with her daughter. The ladies of Brucefieid and Varna district held a lovely show- er for Miss Leona Anderson in the schoolroom of the church -on, Monday night. Clerk George Cowan gave a complete and detailedfinancial report, noting that population had, reached 1,865; total acreage was 53,741 and there is a total prop- erty assessment of $2,737,055. Reeve William R. 'Jewitt said that he had enjoyed the work in council very much during the 'past. year. "I find township work int- eresting and the county council work even more interesting," Reeve Jewitt stated. "The rising amount of unpaid taxes in Hullett is most disturb- ing. Did you know that during the past year a farm had been put up for sale for back taxes?" He pointed, out that this was the first time this action had been taken. "It taxes are high, council usually gets the •blame," and he added, "Council is only responsible for a small portion of your taxation dollar." Mr. Jewitt explained that the schools received ' $10,970.34 which is more money than town- ship council had to spend Reeve Jewitt reported onac- tions of county council, and ex- plained that some changes in staff had been made at the Huron County Home. He commended the work of Mrs. Jacob, saying, "In her 33 years of work at the home she has had the interests of the old people nearest to her heart - she has done a wonderful job." He promised that county council would make certain that high standards set by those in charge of the home would be maintained in the future. George Brown, who is starting his 16th year on Hullett Township council,, mentioned municipal drains saying that they were all nearly cleared up, He stated that a few small culverts and bridges had been built and that gravel VOTE ... Archie Young expressed his be- lief. that the ratepayers were sat- isfied with the manner in which' their affairs had been handled. He said that there had been few complaints and those that had been received had been, handled to eyeryone's satisfaction. Road Superintendent Len Cald- well reviewed the monies spent by his department and the work ac- complished. He felt that this year's road program (which cost approximately $30,000)"was nearly completed and that the township roads were in better shape than ever before. A report was heard from Oliver Anderson, council's representative on the Seaforth District , High School board. He stated that there were more pupils attending than ever before and that the new bus contract had been let for $24,000. The CDCI report was read by George Cowan in the absence of Willis - :ranEginond. This report told of the opening of the new wing of CDC! and gave a detailed financial statement of the opera- tions of the school. A former reeve and warden of Huron County, W. J.
