WINTER Real Estate and Business Broken High Street — Clinton Phone 448 I don't know why they do that. Perhaps successful writers like people to think that they and only they could have written their books because nobody else could see the situation from quite the same point of view. This may be true, but I wonder if such novel- ists as Rosamond 1Vfarshall would Want it said that the torrid' scenes in "Kitty". were literary replicas of her own personal experiences. And would the author of "From Here to Eternity" say: "I wrote that book because it is about what I know"? We all think Boccaccio was quite a fellow, else how could he have written "The Decameron", that racy collection of Arabian tales. And few of us ever think of Omar Khayyam, the Persian tent maker, as anything more than a lascivious old man—al- though we are often led to agree with ,the wisdom of his verses. But just how good, after all, is the advice: Write about what you know. "The Man Who Wouldn't Talk" was quite a good book—a best seller, in fact—until it was dis- covered that the man Dupre, who told the story to Quentin Rey- nolds of his fabulous experiences in the French underground, had just imagined the whole thing. Even Hemingway, who did some of his best work during the Span- ish war, wrote some of those "on - the -spot" accounts amid the gay lights of Paris (But he is a good fisherman, and make no mistake about the genuiness of his "Old Man and the Sea".) Immanuel Kant, the great Ger- man philosopher, wrote a lot of books, a couple of centuries ago, and they are still being sold. His thinking has influenced the think- ing of others all over the world, yet Kant was never more than 50 miles from his Konigsberg home in his 80 years. But he might also have said: Write about what you know; because he denied that our ideas must conform to eternal reality in order to be true, and he proved it, How much did the French writ- er Jules Verne know about life under the ocean when he wrote "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" in 1870? And who would say that he was not successful writing about the future — of which men can for the most part only guess? If I were trying to disprove the old adage—and I am not, because it is generally good advice — I think, Stephen Crane would be as good an example as any. Crane was born in 1871 in Newark, N.J. When he was 21 he wrote a book called 'Maggie: a Girl of the Streets". Few people paid any attention to this novel, and this is interesting since the unjust criticism of his personal life, which eventually drove him to Germany to die at the age of 29, may have suggested that Crane was writing about what he knew. The author triumphed, however, with .the publication in 1895, of "The Red Badge of Courage", a story of how a man feels in battle. It is a famous book, told in lurid language by a very young Alan who was never in battle. Perhaps the rule is valid, never- theless. Thomas Gilchrist of Van- couver, can probably write more easily about the sea than about anything else because he was a sea captain. And certainly Rachel Carson had to know what she was writing about in "The Sea Around Us". It may be that rules are made to be broken, and it is true that few writers worry anymore about starting a sentence with "and" or ending it in a preposi- tion, or in not having a subject and predicate in every sentence. However, if rules are to be brok- en they should be broken only by a master. And that makes the difference. ** You have probably been reading in the newspapers about Sheila MacKay Russell's. book, "The Liv- ing Earth" (Longmans, Green). That's the one which a man in a rural Ontario district has called "vile and indecent". Mrs. Russell, of Edmonton, is one of those housewife writers, like Florence Harrison of Harris - ton, Ontario. She is the authob of "A Lamp is Heavy", published in' 1950, and this as well as "The Living Earth" is based en her, true experiences in a career of nursing. Who is Chekhov? , A lot of people are asking that question these days. The first of four Chekhov plays is now on Broad- way in New York. The fiction anthologies give Special emphasis to Chekhov stories, and Chekhov is a name that most casual read- ers are showing some respect for. .1951: at least until they find out who Well, Anton Chekhov was a Russian writer whose short stories rank among the finest ever writ- ten in any language. He has been dead for over half a century, but The Cherry Orchard", 'The Sea Gull" and his numerous comic sketches are still available at the libraries and are well worth read - Like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, A, J. Cronin and Somerset Mau- ghan, Chekhov was by profession a doctor.
