On Sunday evening about eleven
o'cl'ock, Misses Barbara Bassett
and Helen Blair accompanied Miss
Alice Dunn .to the south pier' for
a cooling -'dip". Alice decided to
stay in the car and read while
theother girls had a swim., They
got more excitement : than they
bargained for when they witnes-

Helen' and Barbara were on
their way back to the car when
near the westerly bend in the pier,
an elderly gentleman ahead of

the edge. He was Mr. Esper,
walking with his son Greg Esper,
The latter had just warned his
father to be careful, and–walked
on until he realized that the
splash he heard had been caused
by his father. (Mr. Esper, Sr.,
had been blinded by the head-
lights of a car turning onto the
pier.)
Knowing that his father could-
n't swim, and not being able to
see him, Greg Esper jumped into
the river, too. His father came
up and managed to get hold of a
cement block in the pier, and Greg
Esper stayed by and supported
him.
Barbara and Helen ran for a life
belt at the end of the pier but
there wasn't one there. (It has
since been relaced.) Barbara tried
to let her towel down for Mr.
Esper to catch but he is a heavy
man and there was no way he
could climb up. The son told the
girls to go for a couple of men to
bring a boat around Alice Dunn
brought her car into position so
that the lights showed the men in
the water.
The girls called for help but

L. A. Stephens and Mrs. Cree
Cook's nephew, L. Blazer, from
the Radford cottage, hastened to
the Cook's outboard .motor beat
and took it to the scene, where
they rescued Mr. Esper and took
his son into the boat, too,
Mrs. Cree Cook telephoned the
chief operator; Mrs. M. Toms, and
reported trouble at the river. In
a matter of moments, P.C. Lloyd
Westlake was on the scene,
It has 'been pointed out that
persons who heard the cries for
help did . not respond as there
have been so many such cries in
nonsense. Persons should refrain
from crying "Help, Help!" in fun
for when a serious situation such
as this arises people think that it
is just someone fooling.' A life
could be lost for want of help.

Painting Bee
There has been a bee at the
rectory this week to improye the
appearance of the building. The
paint had peeled off this spring
which gave it a very shabby ap-
pearance. Men from St. James'
Church, Middleton, turned out in
numbers on Tuesday and men
from Trinity Church, Bayfield,
worked in the evening. They
scraped all the old paint off and
are .busy applying a primer coat.
The walls are being covered with
shingles in. a pearl grey tone. The
hanuners and brushes are °busy
since the men of St. James' con-
gregation wish to finish it this
week while there is a. breathing
spell in the harvest.
