Today, the cream money takes the place of the butter cheque on many farms, and machinery does the churning, weighing and other tasks involved in the production of nature's spread. Back in earlier days of this century though, when farmers' wives;, made their own butter it was a different matter. For one thing, there wasn't always too much 'uniformity in, the butter packages, even though there was' a lot of artistic work. Individuals had their own mark for their butter, and they had their own measuring equipment for shaping the one -pound pack- ages, which were wrapped min paper. Sometimes the measuring boxes`had a built-in stamp, some- times the stamp was separate, but the butter always had a few curlicues here and there when it reached the grocer's shelf. - Today the fancy designs are gone, but the quality and the weight are standard. A pound of first grade butter is just that when the customer buys it - a pound 61 the best butter to be had. There isn't any chance of a slipup along the line. And those fancy stamps didn't do anything for, the flavor anyhow.
