Bayfield Trustees Devote $25 To Library Funds (By our Bayfield correspondent) Mrs, T. C. Bailey approached the Trustee Board of the Village of. Bayfield last Thursday with a request for continuance of the $25 grant for the public library, there. She reminded the trustees that the provincial government match- ed the local grant dollar for dollar. The trustees stated they did not themselves have the 'time to read, and' they said - they felt a grant was paid When the libraries were pretty hardup, but as long as the library was not in the "red", they figured the grant was not really needed. Trustees are John Park- er, Reg. Francis and J. M. Stew- art, chairman. They reviewed the fact that they had only $4,000 to spend in the village, since only about ten mills of the 35 mill rate was left after paying fixed expanses, such as County Rate, 11 mills; educa- tion cost, over 12 mills, and that already $3,000 of that had been spent on roads. A grant of $25 was made to the library. John Howard attended the meeting and advised the trustees that the insurance on the hall and contents were not high enough. This was raised to $3,200 and $800 respectively, plus a supplementary contract, at a little over $50 year- ly premium. Decision was made to mow the grass along main street, and to rake it. The next meeting will be held' in the town hall July 28,. Report was made that the cost of $1,195.62 for applying cold mix to Howard Street, would bepaid for by the Township, as the sub- sidy on " last year's road wok. 42,000 pounds -of oil had been Wile - ed on most of the main roads in the 'village. There is a total of 17 miles of road to be kept up in Bayfield. SS 4, near Clin- ton, and SS 9 (Red Tavern),will still have above normal numbers of pupils. Since last September 17, pupils have been transported daily by school bus from SS 8 to SS 5 school. Indications are that eight, and .possibly ten, grade one pupils start' next September,' with only one pupil leaving from grade eight, making a minimum total of 54 with every possibility that this. number Will be increased. Indica- tions point to no lessening of these numbers in the years ahead as the number of pupils finishing school will be offset by the, natural rate of population increase. Alternative plans for education of the excess pupils were examin- ed and the decision was reached that the most economical and sat- isfactory solution was to provide the accommodation needed. With the co-operation ' of adjoining schools, the Board has . in past years been able to place some of the Area pupils in the Hensel.!, Clinton, RCAF Station Clinton, Seaforth and Hullett schools. Both the RCAF and Hullett advised the Board that they would not be A. B. "Ben" Corless New B of M Manager At Milton A. B. "Ben" Corless, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. T.
